Here's my 2nd attempt at organizing a ride:

The Date: Sept 6
The Time: 8am
The Place: Mayflower Dog Park in Escondido (http://www.ci.escondido.ca.us/glance/parks/mayflower/index.html)
The Ride: Escondido (Dog Park) -> Lake Wolhford -> Palomar -> Cole Grade -> Dog Park

Similar to to the Tour of CA route, always wanted to do Cole Grade after seeing during the ToC so it must be included. I hate pie (but I like the crust) and I detest the 78 from Julian to Ramona so there it is.

Regroup at Lake Wolhford, Top of Palomar, Top of Cole Grade. Come on down and get away from the fire. If your gonna sweat, you might as well do it outside biking...

I'm doing Dudley's-Pmar this Saturday (http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=575637), but I'll try to make your ride too (even though I can't STAND the murderous stretch of Valley Center Rd between Wohlford & the 76.)
When North County needs an enema, that road is where the tube is inserted.

I'm in.

We don't need a SAG car; it's only about a 50 mile ride. Why don't we just give Phil money and have him ride with us?

I'm in. Gotta do it sooner or later. The 5th or 6th is best. The 30th might not be so good as there's a 70% chance I'll wake up that morning to nurse a fierce hangover while trying to remember the name of the girl(s) I woke up next to. :p

A few miles, off of Mission. What makes you think I want you people to know where I live?

BF ride!!?? :thumb: Cool, I'll try to make it. What's "in the morning"? And where is the "dog park"? A street address will be greatly appreciated. I'm not that familiar with Escondido. Any post-ride beer & pizza? I've heard there are some nice micro breweries in Escondido. :D

Maybe delay it a week? It's gonna be effin' hot. Just sayin'.
The hotter, the better. Then I'll probably be able to keep with you for a while (if you are on your single-gear bike, that is)... :o I'm thinking of doing the Fiesta Island ITT on the 13-th, so that weekend won't work for me.

Jimmy, if you're coming south on 15, exit at Valley Parkway and follow it through town to the park. If you get to Lake Wohlford Rd, turn around and go back a couple of blocks.

I can do it on the 6th or 13th. I have to work on the 19th and 20th.

Has the date & time been established yet? (Or was this part of the exclusive memorandum emailed on the QT?)

It looks like Escondido's going to be cooling down this week, so it shouldn't be murderously hot like it was this weekend. (I know, I know, we've gotten soft living here.)

I might be open to picking someone up at the O'side train station on the way to the dog park, if one of you LA/OC types would like to stay off the freeway. (It's only a Ford Ranger though, so I can only fit one.)

P.S. We're not smokey down here. The Marines regularly torch Pendleton's wilderness, so we don't have 60 years of growth fueling our puny fires down here; they're probably even contained by now.

Hey I'd like to do this ride. I did south grade a couple weeks ago and I'd like to try Cole Grade. Are you guys going to be setting a murderous pace? Also would like more details about the time etc

So it's on for the 6th then, 7 am at the dog park? Earlier the better. We could meet at my house but parking is limited (neighbors have like 8 babillion cars per person), though first one there can get the driveway. Water and facilities but BYOB.

calamarichris
08-31-09, 02:59 PM
There's bo-coo parking at the dog park. (?)

Sunday the 6th, 7am; Mayflower Dog Park on Valley Center Road, immediately south of Lake Wohlford Road. Are we in accordance?

This is BF, yes? We don't know the meaning of the word riff-raff.
(Riffraff? Heck I don't even know if it's one word or two.)

If they try any social-climbin' mischief with me, I'll crush them on the grade.

Everyone is welcomed. All that we ask is that you be self-sufficient. As for postponment, let's make the call the closer we get to this weekend. Long range forecast calls for a high of 87 at Valley Center.

Thanks Frank. Now I know where this is. I've done a similar route starting at the Ralph's shopping centre at E Valley & Citrus. By the way, if parking is a problem at the dog park this shopping centre is only about a mile from the dog park and it's got plenty of parking.

So it's on for the 6th then, 7 am at the dog park? Earlier the better.
What's up with that??!! Aren't you getting laid the night before? ;) I've got over an hour drive to Escondido, so the later the better. :D Anyway, it's Ian's ride, whatever he says.

No but I think this is the route. I estimated the mileage. Last time we did this route, it was about 50 miles but we didn't do the Miller loop. I think the loop takes a mile or two off.

L on Valley Center Rd for 1 block
Rt on Lake Wohlford Rd for 7 miles
Rt on Valley Venter Rd for 3 miles
Rt on Hwy 76 for 5 miles
Veer L at So. Grade Rd for 7 miles
L on Canfield
Turn around at store
Rt So. Grade Rd for 7 miles
Rt on Hwy 76 for 7-8 miles
L on Cole Grade Rd for 3-4 miles
Rt on Miller, veer left after about 3 blocks then go 2 miles
Rt on Valley Center Rd until you get back to the dog park.

Per Mapquest it's an almost 2 hr. drive from my house, so no problem. This is on Sunday, right?

How many feet of climbing? Is there someplace to re-fill water bottles along the way?

OK, GP, skippy and I all vote for a later start. I checked the forecast - the high for Escondido for Sunday is 83. :thumb: How about 8:00 AM start? C'mon guys, don't be wussies - this is SoCal, 83 degrees is cool. Hey Rick, are you pretending to be newbie? ;) There is no water on South Grade. The best place to refill before the climb is a little shop opposite to Harrah's casino. I refuse to buy anything at the taco shop, they hate cyclists there.

That store has a bathroom too. And a TV. And you don't have to make a left onto 76 when you leave.

8 is good for me. I need as much beauty sleep as I can get.

That store does NOT have a bathroom. They send their customers to the Taco Shop (which is perhaps the reason they hate cyclists there.) I hate that store too. The jerk sent me to the taco shop (which was closed) and just as I was about to relieve myself back behind the store (in the weeds, not on the building), a CHP prowler pulled up. :(

So 7:00 or 8:00? (or are we having two groups?)

Curious about you guys/gals? pace on the ride. For example, how many minutes would you estimate from the Taco Shop up to Mothers.

For my age (50s) I'm OK on the climbs....but I don't want to ruin your party...

My mistake. That one's very cool. I thought you were talking about the Stage Stop Market on the 76, next to Jilberto's.

7:00 or 8:00? Or are we having two groups?

And there's no need to worry about being a wet towel. (As long as you're self-sufficient.) There are shady & idyllic spots where we can regroup at the base and at the top.
