Some homeless man told me today at starbucks as I was putting electrical tape on my spokes "it will throw off the weight, it'll get whobbly when you're going real fast"

is this true?

Mythbusters (Discovery Channel) debunked the myth that a postage stamp on a helicopter blade would cause a catastrophic imbalance. Similar thing here, I guess.

To be safe, you should probable weigh your tape, and be sure to put equal amounts on opposite spokes.:roflmao2:

spoke cards would probably throw you off more. Plenty of people ride with those no problems.

You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you.

Probably, have to find out on your own.

I put a bit of tape on the bottom of my spokes (reflective tape) but got lazy before finishing it so it only goes 1/3rd around the wheel. Haven't noticed any funny stuff up to 37mph going downhill.

the joint in the rim is way heavier than the tape, even if you use about 50cm of it.

this thread is worthless. why would you ever listen to homeless person about anything? Don't you have your own brain? If a homeless person told you that crack wasn't addictive, would you take his word for it, too? I did and now im ****ed.

I put some electrical tape on my spokes once, and the wheel exploded.

Thats not even close to electrical tape. Way off topic. But seriously youtube spinner bikes. They haven't exploded yet

I think ianjk was making a point that a little electrical tape wouldn't throw off the balance of a wheel.

Bros, how quickly you forget. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQGLNPJ9VCE)

Also, you have a valve stem. It throws things off a lot too. Putting too much weight on one side would be a problem. It doesn't take much if you are going fast enough, but that's more of a ROLL of electrical tape, not a strip.

Why would one put electrical tape on spokes?

Whenever I replace a spoke I usually put a bit of tape around it so I can tell which one is new, and check up on it and see how the tension is. Not sure if that's silly, but so far it hasn't thrown off my balance and hurled me into a curb...

Electical tape is OK but definately do NOT use duct tape!

What about valves? they weigh more than tape!

You're the one that did it... you tell us.

Ok, there is actually benefit of adding tape opposite the joint. Got it.

Ok, take joint and valve locations... average them, and place tape on the opposing spoke. :thumb:

Remember those things from when you were a kid that looked like multi-colored coffee stirrers that went on your spokes?

usually the joint ends up at the bottom for me.

but don't forget the tire isn't evenly weighed around the entire circumference :innocent:
