In 1986 I purchased my dream bike (Ciocc w/campy) from Colorado Cyclist. I put on clinchers and also had a set of sew-up wheels made.

I never used the sew-ups and nearly forgot about them. I just pulled them out of the attic and they even have two "brand new" (kind of like e-bay terminology) 23 year old panaracer tires glued on by the shop. One still holds air after pumping it up 3 days ago, but they are a bit crunchy. The wheelset consists of red label Mavic gp4's 36h, DT stainless spokes and Specialized sealed bearing hubs (New and hot at the time, I believe), supposedly were made by Suntour - (Superbe grade ?).

I know I never used the wheels because I never got an extra freewheel, and the threads on the hub look like they have never been threaded.

I am considering getting a new set of sew-ups and a freewheel and start using the wheels, but started wondering if these wheels are better suited for someone who is restoring a vintage bike and wanted totally unused parts. Otherwise I would just using them up by putting them into service.

What is the opinion on these? If I were to trade them, does anybody have any idea what they might be worth?

Thanks

I paid about $100 for a similar set, but not mint condition...I really like those hubs, and they last. I think you should keep them and ride 'em, replace the tires of course. You might like the Tufo Extreme tape if you're new to mounting sew-ups, makes for a much cleaner job anyway

I always used the red glue in the past. There was double face tape back then but everyone said it didn't work. Is the tufo tape a legitimate alternative to glue? What about roadside changes, do I need a fresh tapejob?

Any suggestions on good & inexpensive tires? It's been a long time since I even shopped for sew-ups.
