Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just got back from a 23-miler today. Nothing terribly long (I'm sure alot of you would call it a warmup), but it's the farthest I've ever ridden and it felt great. Now I'm basking in the glory of my recliner and air conditioning. According to my computer, I averaged about 11 mph - very casual pace (and it was in traffic alot). Still feels like one heck of a workout right now.
Just thought I'd share - this site is one of the motivators that has kept me riding since starting less than 3 months ago.
G'day Randy,
keep up the good work!....you'll be ridin' the tour before you know it!...good one,
cheers,
Hitchy

What a combination: a bike ride, a recliner, and air conditioning. Keep up the good work.
Congratulations! You should be proud of your accomplishment - don't put yourself down! If you really want to make your head swell, go to work or wherever (Heck, make a special trip somewhere...) tomorrow and casually mention today's activities to someone who never bikes. You will get the inevitible reply: "You went HOW far? ... How long did that take you, all day?...I could never do that...etc.). Not everyone can ride a 23 miler! Now just do it 5 times in a row and you'll have a Century under your belt!

I agree just mention how far you went. I do it all the time just beacuse I think it is funny to see what people say and it makes you feel good.

Don't worry about it, every one here that do all of these miles in one go has probably been at a point in their beginner stages that 23 was a big number. As more experience and endurance comes along, the mileage will go up drastically. So right now it is more of a victory, and if you keep following through you will be able to build upon it.

I remember the first long ride I took, it felt great. I just started riding this past February after over a decade off a bike.
Here's to thousands and thousands of more miles and adventures!

I just did 26 miles yesterday on a mtb at 13mph. Thats the first time I've rode anywhere near that far in over 25 yrs. Btw, the wind really kicked my a**.

Keep it up, and when you get your roadie just think how much further and faster you will go, it will be easier when you get your rod bike, good luck on that also.
keep riding and ride safe

Yeah, good job. I've just started riding again after a 10 year layoff. Only been going for a couple of weeks and have limited myself to a resistance trainer on the roof so far. So your accomplishment is way cool to me. Living in Hong Kong is a bit intimidating for a born again cyclist as its always 30C this time of year with high humidity and the only safe places to ride are very hilly. Nevertheless I've got the bug again. Why did I stay away for soooooo long.

Good job! I'm new at this myself. The first weekend I had my bike, I took her out for a quick ride of 14 miles. Later that day, I casually mentioned that fact to some friends and they were amazed! The next weekend, I got up early and rode 25 miles. My next door neighbor said, "Why would you want to do that?" lol
ps - Don't tell anyone how easy it is!

Thanks for the encouragement, everybody else also. I know there are a lot of variables, but about how much of an increase in speed could one expect going to a road bike from a mtb with knobbies? Provided the same amount of exertion is applied to the pedals.

I did the same, going from a mountain bike (and a cheap one at that) to a road bike.
It's something like going from a Pinto to a Corvette.

I changed my mtb tires to slicks and got an increase of about 2-3 mph. Doesnt seem alot but you feel it :)

Congratulations! I know exactly how it feels since I just completed my first 20 mile ride on Saturday (and plan on upping it to 25 miles next Saturday)...
Congratulations again...
