I've been laid off from work since Feb. 18th of this year, almost 5 months. With unemployment benefits ending in just over a month from now, & no possibility of extending it I was getting really concerned about not being able to find work. I have made numerous job contacts & been on several job interviews, sometimes more then one interview with the same company. Iowa Workforce Development, (that what the unemployment dept. is called in this state), requires a minumum of 2 contacts a week. I often made more then that.

But now after all this time I start a new job tomorrow. I'll be working for a bearing company. There was only one position open at the office here in Sioux City. The company is headquartered out of Des Moines. I found out that 50 people applied for this job, of those 25 were eliminated as candidates right away. Of the remaining 25, 10 of us were selected for an interview. Of those 10, 5 of us were selected for the 2nd interview & testing. Of those 5, 3 of us were selected as the final candidates for this position. The results of our tests & appliciations were sent to Des Moines with the interviewer's suggestions as to who should be given this job. The "hiring committee" in Des Moines at the head office choose me after over a week of discussing it. I found out today. None of us that applied or that were even interviewed for the position met one another or went through any kind of group interview or testing. I asked what the competetion was like for this position, & thus I was told. I like to know how many people I am up against for a position as it let's me know what to maybe expect. The reason there was a lot of response for this position was Gateway Computer closed it's manufacturing facility in Norht Sioux City, SD, which put a lot of people out of work. So the job market here in this area for those that were already unemployed before that happened got a lot tougher & competetive.

I will not be doing drafting work, which is what I had been doing for the past 10 years. Instead I'll be doing purchasing/shipping & logistics. But my drafting skills will come in to play when dealing with bearings, chains, belts, sprockets & gears of various types.

I am very happy that I will be back to work. A huge load has been taken off of my mind, especially with paying the bills, etc. Ironically tomorrow is also my 13th wedding anniversary with my lovely wife. So wish me luck.

Congratulatons, N_C! I know what it's like. Was laid off for about 5 months myself, until stumbling into a temp job that became permanent. Best of luck with the new gig!
