Gusty and windy today, and I took the scenic route, so it was just under 13 miles. I have just crested the last hill, my house is literally not more than 100 feet away, and on the side of the road I see a cyclist down, not moving, and a car parked right beside him with a driver a bit hysterical.

So, I pull up to the body in the road to assess the situation. He is laying in a small pool of blood that has been seeping out of his unconscious head and flowing down the hill. It doesn't take very long to determine this is not one of his better days.

I pulled out the cell phone and called for an ambulance. They arrived rather quickly, but it seemed like an eternity. The fire department EMTs arrived first, with an ambulance arriving about five minutes later. They hauled him away after bracing his neck and immobilizing him on a back board.

From what I was able to gather, the car didn't actually hit him. She was just the first to arrive at the scene and wasn't very calm in handling the situation. I am still not entirely sure what happened to make him go down so hard. He was riding a BMX type bike up a hill so you wouldn't think he would be going very fast, but you never know if you didn't see it.

My son, 7 years old, when learning all the details of the incident, immediately said to me, "That is why you are supposed to wear a helmet!"

I couldn't agree more. Chances are extremely good that if he was wearing one he would have ridden home with a big scrape on his back but otherwise none the worse for wear.

Yikes! I hope he recovers. Good advertisement for wearing a helmet at all times when road cycling.
