I just got my new 2009 Giant Defy Advanced 3. Carbon. 105/ultegra. So excited. I came home today, and my mom threw away my circa '82 Lotus. (I'm 16 (Edited as my birthday was monday. I forget :p)). Her explanation? You only need two bikes (the new one and my mountain bike). I paid for the new one, not her. I paid for the Lotus, not her. I just put new tires on it. Cyclone drivetrain. She said it's old and crappy. The paint job was near flawless. :bang::bang::bang:

sucks to hear about your mom throwing away your old bike..
believe me.. it gets worse once you move out.. cuz they think that anything that's yours is garbage and throw it all out, then turn your room into an entertainment center area.. lol.. but you still got a while till that happens..
now post some shots of your new Giant beauty.. she sounds purddyyyy.. :D
Wonder if it will show up in C&V?: Hey look what I found sitting out at the curb on my way home tonight!

It was 95 and humid, then after I got off work (Bike shop, with the new bike), it started storming. So I only got to ride it home.

Just curious, how does a 15 year old earn enough money to buy a new Defy Advanced 3?

Pro deal. 100% of summer pay checks going towards it.

Did the trash guys already come? Or did she take it to the dump?
What's stopping you from going to get it (other than your mom yelling at you?)
mzeffex
08-21-09, 10:09 PM
She took it to the dump. I went over there, they already took the stuff away. I really hope someone found and took it, rather than it being crushed.
Oh parents. I'm glad I had a lock on my door when I went away for college.

Papillon cycles. It's small, but I like it. And no, just a small dump for my neighborhood.

Is mom sticking to her guns on this or does she now regret her actions?
If mom understands what she has done, then start checking out Craig's List etc. and when you find one, present her with the bill. Maybe she'll pay it. At least she may understand what she has done. Here's a lead. http://mobile.craigslist.org/bik/1330231734.html.
$100 for the bike, about $120 for shipping.
Here's one for $250 http://chicago.craigslist.org/chc/bik/1334869607.html
and here's one at $450 http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/bik/1332988468.html
And when you move out, take everything valuable to you WITH YOU. Mom sounds like she acts before she thinks or talks.

Yeah, she didn't apologize. Her theory being that the new bike is nicer, so why keep the old one?

Is it too late to ride over there and snatch it? I'm sure you could find someone to hold onto it for you.

Dude, I don't know you or your mother, but I am the dad to 2 kids, one a little older than you. Trust me, by 15 she should have at least some respect for any hard work on your part. I can understand the idea that she doesn't want to be a 3 bike family and had she ordered you to dispose of it (sell it) then I could see her point but chucking a perfectly good Lotus in the trash is (or should be) a mortal sin.
Protect your stuff when you leave in a few years.

I went over earlier, the dumpsters were empty. I checked all of them. The trash ones and the ones for metal/glass/appliances. No luck.

At the very least, you should use this as an opportunity to talk to her about what to do/not do with your stuff.
Maybe tell her that you could have given it away to charity, or to a friend if you didn't want to keep it, or you were going to use it for getting around town.
At the very least, I think she owes you another bike off craigslist, not that she'd do it. It's just completely idiotic and unreasonable for a parent to throw away something without even asking if it was wanted.

I agree. I mean, I'm happy with the new one, but that bike wasn't a beater bike. I really did like it.

Bummer, dude.
I moved out at 17, when I got my current "Real" job, which I've been at for almost 5 years now, once I moved out, my parents would at least leave stuff on my doorstep for me to find, they never threw anything of real value away.

I can sympathize, as my Dad threw away a 1930's Humber 3 speed I was rebuilding when I was living at home many, many, many years ago. The worst part was that I had just successfully rebuilt the original Sturmey Archer hub and gotten the front generator hub working.
His rationale? It was taking up valuable space in the garage. This space was NEVER in use, then or after, by the way.

Yep, I was just waiting on the arrival of some vintage 28" tires for it, and it would have been ride ready. I was not a happy camper, but I was 16, and he trashed it while I was in school.

It is the new bike that's keeping me from flipping out. Well, more than I am now anyways. Silent treatment for her! At least she took the carbon looks off. I just got new shoes for them, and if they weren't there, I would have been furious.
Ida brought her to the dump to look for it. "Don't come home 'til ya find it!"
I take that back. Ida killed her and then brought her to the dump.

Yeah, the girlfriend tried that whole "How many bikes do you think you need?" crap with me once... to which I responded "Well, how many pairs of shoes do you need?"...
It has since ceased to be an issue and my bikes look very nice in the living room, like art I can ride.

I have to keep 2 bikes in my 80 sq ft bedroom. One at the base of my bed and one next to my bed. The one next to it has to be moved to get in or out :D

Wall rack man. Invest in one.
Also, a good chain lock that is impervious to moms.

Tom, that's kinda big. I have enough floor space for a bike (which as you know are relatively narrow), but not for the large base of that. And I have a fan. Maybe some kind of ceiling rack would work, that would be directly over my bed. Hopefully it will not fail in the night. That would be bad. But what a way to die!

Those ceiling racks are pretty easy and cheap to make out of eye-bolts and some paracord, as long as you don't mind 3 smallish holes in your ceiling. Just make sure to hit joists.
