Mountain Biking - how do i properly set the preload adjustment on my rear hub

ive just finished cleaning and repacking my rear hub. ive put the axle back in and put the cone nut on. i know i dont tighten it down all the way or else the axle wont turn. so how do i do this properly so the axle turns but there is no play?

Most all of the OP's questions on this forum could easily have been answered by Sheldon's or Park Tool's sites.
OP- All these threads about repacking a rear hub? It's overkill, could have been one thread and got 'er done. Just sayin'. :o
