Fifty Plus (50+) - Approaching the 5th anniversary of the 50+ Forum

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

The 50+ Forum had a long birth and gestation period, but Joe's official announcement was September 24, 2004.

Shall we have a virtual party?

Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us...

Thanks, Denver, for getting this started. It has been an important part of my cycling life. It's the only forum I read.

How about we all sit down at six o'clock (your home time) and have a piece of pie Sept.24 in celebration of the birth of this forum. No bike ride necessary that day to earn a piece of pie.

That date is near enough to the "Official" PIE ride to say that we have 2 PIE days in September.

A Birthday Party often involves gifts. Here's a thought.....

Suppose that those of us who can, gift a bicycle to someone in their community who isn't as fortunate as we may be. It doesn't have to be a new bike, just something that you've picked up somewhere along the way. It can be a direct gift to an individual whom you're aware could use a hand, or given to an organization already set up to do the gifting. Many communities have already set up ways for folks to channel their donated bikes through bike shops etc., and the shops will ensure that the bikes go where they are most needed. Just make sure that it's serviceable and safe to use. Another option could be to donate our time and talents to help someone return their bike to service by helping/teaching them how to do anything from changing a tube to doing a full tune-up.

I know that several folks in this 50+ group already donate time, energy, skills and items. This could be an opportunity for even more of us to help out just a bit.

What better way to celebrate the Birthday of the great 50+ forum than to spread the joy of cycling. Then, at the end of the day, be sure to sit down and have some pie.

+1 on the pie at 6PM Mountain Time, USA on Sept 24.

Hummmm - this is a special day and time - demands a special pie - Fortunately this gives me enough time to decide on what kind of pie -

Not the only forum that I participate in but it's certainly my favorite.

If you check out the posts prior to establishing 50+, you'll find at that time I was a nay-sayer. Was I ever wrong!

The only pie appropriate for consumption on the great day according to the Founder is Blueberry but some of us Hoary Old Grumps would disagree with that choice just to cause a ruckus.I for one am thinking of a blackberry, blueberry and apple combination, black and blueberries to remind us of the aches and pains of growing older just like a bruise and apple for the fiber.

You can count me in for a pie celebration but I will have a couple of tough choices to make, Key Lime, Pecan, or Coconut creme.
This forum has meant a lot to me since joining. I found it by accident while trying to learn a little more about cycling and what type bike I wanted to switch to. I have learned a great deal about cycling, enjoyed a lot of stories, had some laughs, and even shared some sorrows.
Sometimes I wander over to a few other forums but I always come back here.
Thanks Denver for starting it.

Good idea. A year ago I took two old kids bikes, a box of (good) parts, and a vintage bike I'd bought on a whim but realized was the wrong size. I'm still happy about it.

Your post is a good reminder that it's time to create another box of stuff for them.

Same here, exactly.

Oh yeh, you're not looking for kudos. :innocent:

I'm raising my coffee mug to celebrating with PIE ---- while wearing our 50+ jersey (or planning to buy one if you don't have it yet).

If you throw a party I'd appreciate it if you keep the noise down. I'm trying to catch a nap.
