Vehicular Cycling (VC) - Shed some light
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
So I was reading the laws concerning bicycles in Massachusetts via the Massbike website. Here in the Berkshires most cyclists travel in the break down lanes, in several spots it is posted not to drive in the BDL, and under Chapter 85: Section 11B it says; "shall be subject to the traffic laws and regulations of the commonwealth and the special regulations contained in this section"
So does this mean that driving a bicycle in a posted BDL is illegal?
OK, in your link, it doesn't specify anything about a BDL; however, if it is posted not to bike in a BDL, then YOU CAN'T BIKE IN A BDL!
Doesn't take a complicated application of legalese or logic. If it's posted that you can't do something, then BY GOLLY, you can't do it. That's called notification of the law. Burns down the excuse of "I didn't know..."

I can't help but completely agree that, by MA law, cycling in a break down lane may not be considered the same as driving.
