There is a town called Jones just to the east of OKC. It's frequented by a lot of individual cyclists and group rides because the surrounding areas provide a number of fairly wooded and pretty flat 30 to 60 mile loops of decent country road. Good for fast rides. Well yesterday the city decided to generate some revenue and had police cars watching the two stop sign intersections. Results? Over 30 failure to come to a complete stop citations issued to cyclists. And that's just from people that are on our club chat group. Who knows how many others we don't communicate with. And then there's cars that were also cited. Jones made a bundle yesterday.

Oops, forgot. Citations were 173 bucks each.

Don't think of them as stop signs....think of them as a place to wipe the sweat off your glasses and suck down some GU --- which might just lead to your stopping by them, but that's just a coincidence.

When i'm in the city i stop at lights. When i'm out in the country (most of the time) i roll stop signs....i slow down but if nobody is coming, whats the point?

Sounds like the town just wanted some cheap revenue.

There was little town near here that targeted everyone. The state finally pulled their charter and shut them down.

Meh. The easy way to avoid problems is to obey the law, at least when the cops are watching. In our town, the cops will pull anyone over for minor infractions -- I tell visitors to be sure they obey the laws. I've been pulled over a number of times for all kinds of things, most recently a headlight that had gone out that night. I've never actually received a ticket yet.

Nah, just practical. If I see a cop sitting by the side of the road, I figure he probably doesn't have any pressing business to attend to. I'd rather someone other than me broke up the monotony of his day, so I avoid doing anything that would attract his attention. And yes, I have been pulled over on a bike a few times too...

Saw the same thing on Long Beach Island NJ this week. We stopped. The guy we had been riding with did not. We saw him yelling at the cop who had written him the ticket on the way back. It was pretty funny.

Just wondering.... What if you don't carry an ID with you on your bike? How do they know the name you give is your real one? Do they haul you in if you have an ID?

I got nailed in IN once by a *$*&#)(!! little town that had extended it's city limits (and 30mph speed limits)
about a 1/2 mile out into the cornfields along a wide, straight state highway with a 65mph speed limit.
There was no clue when you were driving out of town except for the *absence* of a 65mph sign until about a mile later.
Officer Fife was parked behind a billboard in a cornfield in classic fashion.

Next time your club rolls through, have them wear OU jerseys and tell the cops that you are the new team. They will probably give you a police escort. Unless of course the mayor/police chief are Cowboy or Longhorn fans...

Same rules apply for cyclists as motorists,.... technically you should have identification on you at all times. You are seldom hauled in, but it is at the discretion of the officer.

Huh? Maybe in your state. In mine there is no requirement that cyclists, or pedestrian, or equestrian or rollerblader or whatever carrying ID.

I think all those ticketed should show up to court to fight the tickets and totally clog that little town's system all up.

They'll verify using your ssn or address. If you give a cop false info, he or she can detain you while they investigate. If you're cited, the best thing to do is go to court or pay it.

Actually a much better way is to do a written declaration give the cop a TON more paperwork without overtime pay. :thumb:

Papers please?

Unless there's a chronic problem with bicycle lawlessness in the community, I think this is a mis-allocation of safety resources. Really, what is the greater danger to others on the road? A yahoo SUV driver speeding along, or a cyclist chugging along the side of the road at 18 mph?

That said, I highly support this kind of crackdown on the Nyack Ride. Those above-the-law hotshots need to be taken down.

There is no national identification requirement. However, the issue changes when you violate a law (like the cyclists) above and for any reason the officer has reason to believe you aren't who you say you are.

That stop sign, although the impression given is it's out in the middle of nowhere, is there for a reason.

Zero tolerance enforcement reeks of revenue generation.

You don't have to have a driver's license to ride a bike.. Wonder how the ticket would be treated if you had no driver's license.. Cause had you been issued a ticket, there'd be points on your license.

Camera Tickets here in So Cal run anywhere from 200.00 to 400.00 depending on the city you are in.

Even if one has a license, bicycle tickets do not go on one's driving record.

Sure. The reason is to keep multi-tun hunks of metal from hitting things and causing massive damage. It's not nearly as important to control the movements of 200 lb. vehicle/riders.

Without ID they could cite you for vagrency.

ehidle
08-24-09, 06:45 AM
You are neither required to carry nor required to produce an identification card to the government. You may be required to identify yourself, but an official ID card is not necessary for doing that.

At the same time, you can be detained until your identity is positively determined, so usually it's best to produce some kind of government-issued ID card if you value your time and convenience.

Usually, being difficult with a cop is only going to result in more hassle for you and more O/T for the cop. As much as that sucks, this is the system we've voted for, so unless and until we install a more libertarian government, we'll have to put up with the JBT brigades...

Except of course, when a multi-ton hulk of vehicle mows down 200lb or bike+cyclist because said cyclist blew through the stop sign and the hulk couldn't avoid the crash. Then we all cry foul, don't we? I hope you're being sarcastic.... :o

I also don't know how no one, or at least a lot of people, didn't see police cars sitting and watching. I wasn't there, just got a lot of posts on our local club board. And to clarify, I wasn't looking to complain about Jones PD, they were doing their job. Maybe a little over zealous but within the law. We know the law and are supposed to follow it. And the ID thing. This was a point of argument. Apparently a lot of cyclists don't carry a drivers license on the bike. And it's not a motor vehicle so it isn't required by law. The officers weren't happy about this. They had to verify names and that took time.
