Touring - Stem extender...good thing?

Hey, i just got a bike on craigslist, but it is a bit small of a fram, its a 52 cm i probably need a 56ish. I was looking into getting a BBB BHP stem extender and maybe a BHS stem that is adjustable. I was wondering if anyone has used an extender, and if they are a good way to raise the handlebars (because my seat is fine). Any info would be great thanks!

Yes, I've used them and they work fine. Once installed you won't know it's there, very solid. Get a handful of those aluminum spacers and you can dial it right in.

I use one. No functional problems. Has improved fit and comfort for me.

Keep an eye out for a better-fitting frame, once you know exactly what measurements work for you.

It's not just the height of the handlebars you have to worry about. You also need to worry about the reach. It sounds like the bike is just too small for you, and no monkeying around with extenders will ever make the top tube length the proper length.

I keep seeing "BBB" used in Bike Forum discussions. Most abbreviations are easy enough to figure out, but not this one. Can someone tell me what it is short for?

It's a brand name, I didn't recognise it either, your not alone MM. ( Which stands for Mad Mabel just incase :D )

One nice thing about a stem raiser (if that's what you're talking about) is that once it's installed, you can then switch stems without having to worry about readjusting the headset - the stem raiser has its own bolts, just like a stem, so it holds the headset in place. That's just a nice little convenience to have, if you're experimenting with stems.

The downside of a stem raiser is that it will tend to raise your bars quite a bit, so there's kind of a gap between the top position on the old steerer, and the bottom position on the raiser (unless you get a stem with a different rise, or turn it over, I guess).

All in all, I think stem raisers are fine, I've never had any problems with them. Some don't like the aesthetics of it, but otherwise they are very good for dialing in your cockpit fit if you need to get the bars up some. Especially with bikes that have had their steerer tubes prematurely cut too short.
