I know it depends alot on the demand, but what kind of markdowns do lbs's usually have on the '03 models. I've looked at an '03 Trek 2200 priced at $1599, when the '04's are like $1715. I thought I seen where some places were selling them more in the range of $1299.

Keep an eye out for '03 Dura Ace bikes. I got a complete Cannondale CAAD7 at an LBS super sale here in Los Angeles w/9-speed DA for $1350...Same bike this time last year was selling in the $2500-3000 range. They wanna unload em now that 10-speed is here.

Specialized must have been hoping for a banner year. I got my new 03' Allez Elite for $800.00 out the door. Regular retail was 1050.00 (or something like that).
As to the original question, I think 25-30% off MSRP is reasonable considering average retail markup is closer to 50% (don't shoot the messenger), and the fact that the bike is closer to being three years old (built in late 02' for the 03' season, its July 04' now and the 05's will be out in a month or two).
Make him an offer.

Great, that's what I was thinking. Like to buy from the local shop, & I know they have to make some money, but I'm not made of money & I know a guy that used to have a Trek dealership & he said Trek allowed for the markdowns; i.e. it didn't all come out of the local guy's pocket.
I think $1599 the MSRP for the '03's, & I'd gladly give him $1200-1300, just so I could have the bike I really wanted, & one I could pronounce.
I tried to make a deal on an '03 Lemond Zurich that's been sitting in a shop for more than a year and a half. The owner wouldn't budge more than the already marked down price of $1,800. Now I realize that's $400 off the original price they had on it but I was ready, willing and able to buy it that day.
I asked him to "eat the tax" and he gave some sob story about it being in the inventory already, blah, blah, blah. I asked if cash made a difference, apparently it didn't. I told him I understood he was a business and that part of that business is to make money, but business is also about moving stagnant stock to bring in the new stuff. They didn't have a single '04 on the floor...I was looking in June!
I asked about the '04 models and they were $200 more than other local dealers. I figured I'd give him one more shot to make the sale and asked for a store credit equal to the 6% tax I was going to pay. Not a chance. Giving store credit isn't like giving away the total amount of money. He marks up everything in the store so credit is actually like making a coupon sale.
Regardless, I wasn't looking for a FREE bike, just a sweeter deal on buying a leftover model that was collecting dust.
I bought an '04 from another dealer that gave me store credit of 10% right off the top...without me asking. They do that for all expensive bike purchases. It's a loyalty rewards program. You get 10% in credit for every dollar you spend at the shop. I understand it's not like getting the cash off the purchase but it's better than nothing.
