Does anyone know how to get to the clock while riding? It defaults to the time after I stop riding, but I can't figure out how to tell what time it is while riding.

Hold the mode button down for 2 seconds until clock appears. That is the button on the front under the numbers

anybody know how to get it to defaultly display Cadence and Speed?
i always use it at that mode... and sometimes when i begin again it goes to Cadence-Ride time

Push mode to cycle through Spd(or Cdc)/Odo/Mx/Av/Dst/Tm on the bottom view.
You can also hold down Start/Stop for a few seconds to switch the top view between Spd or Cdc. Whatever is not in the top will be available in the bottom.
It sounds like you need a manual. It is here, if you have adobe acrobat reader (free) loaded:

yeah, i know how to scroll through the display, and how to toggle between cadence/speed as the main (big) display
i just dont know how to get the display to keep that setting between rides... ie everytime i begin a ride it starts with CDC/Tm again =\

i dont think you can...it would be handy though

another thing, can you boys and girls show (with a pic) how you've routed your wire/cable? i have the wire electrical taped to the under side of the downtube, going up to the head tube, with a slack, and then wrapping up the front brake cable
even with the big slack i leave between the brake cable and the downtube, sometimes the tension gets to the wire on the downtube part and makes it all sloppy looking

Mine is setup the same way, however, I use clear zip ties rather than tape. On the downtube, the wire is very secure. No problem with too much tension and the sloppy results.

I've seen a lot of bikes with the wire wrapped around the brake cable but this doesn't look too good, IMHO. I recommend either clear tie-wraps, as kip2714 suggested, or (if your brake cable housing are black) use electrical tape and run the wire down the backside of the housing.

I have a question on this computer - Is it possible to reset the average speed without resetting the trip odometer? For example, leaving on a group ride, I like to reset the average speed after we "roll" out of town while keeping my total distance.
Looking at the manual, it doesn't look like you can do this.

I just installed one on my old Davidson. The only function that it has that my Cateye Solar didn't is the auto on/off feature. The Solar broke this weekend after about 15-20 years of use. The wheel pickup stopped working, and I couldn't trace it to a fixable broken wire. One good feature of the Astrale 8 is that the wheel pickup is in the rear, allowing use on an indoor trainer.
I'll have to wait until tomorrow to give it a thorough test. If this one holds up as long as the last one, I'll be on Social Security when I need a new one.
