I purchased an old Gary Fisher Mountain Tandem. From what I suspect the bike was built in the early 90's. It is black in color with the white specs that were so popular back then. It has Shimano DX components. The shifters were changed to Grip Shifts. This thing is a tank but is in very good condition. My wife and I put slicks on it and do mostly road riding. Just wondering if anyone knows the history of these bikes and who actually manufactured them?

Just an update. The nice folks at Gary Fisher sent me this e-mail.

Hey Jim,

Thanks for the email. Thompson just supplied some of the components for this bike and I believe it is a '95, and unfortunately we don't have any decals to send out, I hope this info helps, thanks and have a great day.

Ride on,

I have one of these; we purchased it new in the early '90s. Mine has Shimano Deore DX w/Suntour Self-Energizing cantilever brakes.

I don't remember that black w/white specks was particularly popular back then. Anyway, this is a mountain bike tandem so I assume that the paint scheme was to hide dirt.

It's a bit heavy but not so bad. We have street tires also and it goes pretty fast. The steering is pretty slow, however. We found that the stoker's compartment was too short so we had a custom Rodriquez built and we don't ride the Gary Fisher anymore. They were probably Tiawanese-made but I really never thought it enough to care - still don't.

Person I bought the bike from did some updates on mine. Brakes are now XT. Still have DX components but the shifters were switched out to grip shift.

The bike was built in Taiwan.

Did about 40 miles on it this weekend. You are right about the stoker position being short.
