...Ben Kingsley should play il pirata.

I saw him in Sexy Beast on IFC last week and Kingsley was awesome as ever and started thinking about the uncanny resemblance. Wouldn't he make a great Marco?

Vampire prosthetics? Really tacky making fun of a beloved athelete that died so tragically and left such a unfinished life at an early age.

how'd he die and at what age?

Marco Pantani, a great climber and champion of the Giro D'Italia and Tour de France died last February at the age of 34 of an overdose of cocaine. He was known to have been depressed for some time before his death.

I was not fan of Pantani's when he was alive, though the pictures posted above were not intended as disrespect. I didn't care for Pantani because I didn't think he was a very nice person, and because his greatest victories were tainted with allegations of doping.

There were things I liked about Pantani. Among them, he brought a sense of color to the sport of cycling. And he was, after all is said and done, an incredible climber.

The first time I saw Pantani with his head shaved, I thought, this guy looks like Max Schreck. Schreck was the actor who played Count Orlok in the silent film Nosferatu--the first vampire movie ever made. Schreck was portrayed by Willem Dafoe in the movie Shadow of the Vampire. Since Max Schreck is long dead and mostly forgotten, I thought that Willem Dafoe made the better reference.

Another thing that I liked about Pantani is that he dared to make himself look that way. It indicated to me that he had a sense of humor about himself. I liked the "Pirata" caricature that was used on his website and that was stitched on his signature saddle. I suspect that Pantani knew he looked like Max Schreck and I don't think he minded it.

KIngsley is a bit old. I thought of Vin Deisel but he's too beefy.

Watching the tour has made me miss pantani!

I also miss Pantani. I was really looking forward to seeing him at the Giro, and when I saw he'd O.D'd, I was upset. But then I went to the Giro, and not only did they have a magazine dedicated to the wins of Pantani with page after page of beautiful photos, they also had a DVD of all his wins too! I couldn't believe I got my hands on these things. I will always have a soft spot for Pantani, no matter what the problems he had, and I'm glad to have these tributes. Finally, Pantani has the positive press he always wanted. Too bad he had to die to get it. :(

This, I think, was the saddest aspect of his death. It was only after he'd died that the fans came out and the press said nice things.

The fans were always really supportive of pantani, not just when he died. NO matter what, he was their big hero. I remember watching the 2003 giro, his last race. Phil and Paul were commenting on how popular Pantani and Cipo were. When the riders came out to sign in, the fans all cheered for Simoni, and Garzelli, but when Cipo and Pantani came out, the fans went crazy! And on the Zoncolan stage, when simoni won, the fans were all cheering, but when pantani went by, they were going insane, screaming their heads off and pounding him on the back- he was even more popular than simoni! He wasn't just popular, it's like people really loved him.

Now that the tour is in the mountains, I miss pantani. It's almost like I keep expecting to catch a glimpse of his bald head and his doo-rag, and those skull and crossbones flags!
