Northern California - Next Weekend... Shall we Try Hamilton once again??

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Ruth and I want to get a longer ride in next week with some sustained climbing.

I was thinking about the Hamilton Backroads ride I came up with a while ago.

REVISED ROUTE:
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=79894

94 miles with 11,400 feet of climbing.

7:30 am start time, Saturday 9/5.

Here's the list so far:
- Marco & Ruth (tandem)
- Ramon (probably cut it short)
- Tall Chris
- Michael
- shatdow (Matt)
- Donald (might turn around at the Bridge [on the backside])
- Ron

If it's too hot... I will have a Santa Cruz Mtns backup route.

Don't know the forecast yet.

Also down for the original routes from last week's thread.

Again this is for Saturday 9/5

Sure you don't want to give the TTT Championships a try?

I don't know if I'll be in town that weekend. Can't decide if I want to spend Labor Day weekend in NorCal or SoCal.

yeah, too far in advance maybe probably in for at least some parts of this. Maybe not the whole thing.

Marco, you know I'll do it if I'm not working. My next few weekends are up in the air due to school opening.

Forecast looks promising, a little hot but not crazy...

Thursday through Saturday Night:
Mostly clear. Highs in the lower 80s. Lows in the 50s to 60s.

Ok, I'm in, I think. I'll skip going to LA this weekend, and go the following weekend.

Holy crap ... just realized this is a 104 mile 12,037 feet climb ride!

Had to use wolframalpha to convert from metric to english. Ok ok, I was stretching for a reason to use it.

Edit: Oops ... didn't see you advertised the climbing in the OP. I need better glasses.:geek:

Yeah, I'm sure glad that I have to wash my hair that day.

PS: What do you expect from a Marco ride?

I can't do the whole ride but am in for at least the summit, perhaps to the bridge and back depending on time.

I'm thinking of doing the up and immediately down "gentle" ride. Probably would like to puke up the Quimby side for a change of pace.

edit: look what I found (http://photos.tow.com/Sports/Low-Key-Hillclimbs/Quimby-Road-2008/6297370_eFJ8G#396974284_i4kpK-A-LB) when googling quimby...

let's see ramon, eric, and the italian stallion?

We can always cut out the Del Puerto bit, but it actually looks pretty tough, and different (never done it before).

I'm in for this ride, but what's the water situation? That canyon looks a little... dry.

Here's the other "backroad" Kincaid:

Water can be had:
- Just after Quimby
- At the summit
- At the junction (cafe) at Del Puerto/San Antonio Valley/Mines junction.
- Once again at the junction, also lunch, before hitting the backside of Hamilton
- At the summit again

(Unfortunately no special free spring water on Adobe Canyon, since it is closed Saturdays :( )

So no camelback required? Sounds good.

There is also water (and bathrooms) at the County Motorcycle Park on Del Puerto. If you go down Del Puerto I recommend turning around at the first long flat straight (or at the motorcycle park) to avoid boring flat riding. And watch for rocks on the road.

So are we cutting out Del Puerto or Kinkaid?

uspspro
09-02-09, 02:46 PM
I'd rather cut out del Puerto I guess, Kincaid looks pretty fun, and isn't to far out

rumbutter
09-02-09, 02:47 PM
Del Puerto is pretty rough. Nice on a motorbike with suspension but not as much fun on a bicycle. There is a wicked fairly technical descent near the county line. That is quite a ride you have planned.

uspspro
09-02-09, 03:01 PM
OK, without Del Puerto it is 88 miles, 10,600 feet.
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=79844

What's the consensus?

Hmm, this looks like fun. Count me as a "strong maybe". I'll decide tomorrow. I'd be in for either the 88 or 100 mile-versions, but to be honest the 88 sounds a little more appealing.

I'm in for either. Maybe both?! I need to borrow a light.

not a chance. just kidding. it's a long weekend anyway, will try to ride each day.

Since this is a Hamilton backroads ride, you want to add two more roads (one climb/one descent) off Hamilton on the way to Quimby? This will add about 4 miles over just using White Rd and a good warm up climb up Crothers.

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3154881 (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3076824)

Also, depending on time, I might have to also turn around at the bridge.

09-02-09, 05:42 PM
Donald your link sent me to Hicks ;)

I used Mt Pleasant Rd to be the warm up for Quimby. Maybe I could add Crothers/Clayton to Mt Pleasant to Quimby?

Exactly... I don't mind cutting out Del Puerto, since we plan to ride in the Peninsula on Sunday.

OK... What is the concensus of this revised route:
http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=79894

Adds the Crothers warmup climb. New totals are 94 miles with 11,400 feet.

uspspro
09-02-09, 06:00 PM
LOL... That straight away after the hairpin on Crothers Rd looks interesting.....

Make sure you are facing the right way... mapmyride says 20% for around 0.15 mi

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=17218+crothers+rd,+san+jose,+ca&sll=37.390584,-121.803102&sspn=0.024447,0.038581&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=A&layer=c&cbll=37.390591,-121.803117&panoid=9hO5TDW3MPrDR2N1YONjlg&cbp=12,172.63,,0,9.91

Clayton looks like a nice little downhill too... OK I like this route, I think I will make it official then! See original post.

dl33
09-02-09, 07:56 PM
fixed the link, but you basically got it. Up Crothers and down Clayton. Then over to Quimby which ever way.

Crothers got that last section you mentioned that looks straight up and this steep section at the beginning thats about 10 yds long which the road is all cracked, get in your low gear and ride it like a mtb. Clayton has a nice downhill section where you can go 40+.

Will there be an ambulance at the bottom of the hill? :roflmao2:

Maybe I need to ride Crothers and Clayton tomorrow to see what you are talking about.
