General Cycling Discussion - When is it time to buy new bike shoes

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Sounds like a joke , but it's not. I have a pair and they seem ok. Just want to know the difference between NEEDING new shoes vs WANTING new shoes.
Hi Everyone - this is my first post - Just found the forum!!!

If you do buy new shoes, you might consider biking sandals. Mine are clipless (I have Shimano cleats) and I have worn nothing else since I got the sandals. They are wonderful!
Besides that, sadly, my "real" biking shoes seem to last forever!
And, WELCOME!

Isn't that why we have desire (and credit)?
To aquire something out of want and shun that which is old?
Eh?

OK, but then what do I do with the old ones. I live in NYC and the apt's here don't have any room for extra stuff

What kind? I'll give you $5 for them. :D
I'm thinking the same thing. I have a pair of shoes that work fine, but they SQUEAK when I pedal. It's driving me mad!!!

it is a good idea to have some proper cycling shoes. Yesterday my shoelace wrapped itself round the pedal and I nearly fell off. I had to sort of edge off the bike path with my bike to the side to get free. I also nearly collided with some guy on a bike while I was doing it. It was like something out of Mr Bean.

its time to buy new cycling shoes if the soles have lost their stiffness. under heavy duress, shoes can last only 3-5 seasons. i'm riding some shimano's that are starting to lose some stiffness, and there are only 2 velcro straps, so adjustment is tough. when the terrain is undulating, and you need to stand and stomp, good shoes are a must.
another reason to get new shoes it when the screw bosses on the underside that accepts the cleat gets stripped or doesn't hold anymore.
some need a tighter fit near the toes, some need a tighter fit nearer to the ankle. 2 or even 3 velcro straps + a fastener that is on the sidi's have made that shoe very popular (along with the fact that they are stiff and have replacable soles, etc)
you can't put a price on comfort. $189 seems like a lot for Sidi Genius 4's, but they will last 10,000 + miles and many seasons, it is a bargain when all is said and done. now that's performance.

shoes, will not occupy a very large space in your New York apartment, I live in an apartment myself in Toronto, and I have two Bikes, staked-up against a wall 3 cycling shoes, I mean if you like the shoes, just buy it you will find a place to store them, later when your not using it

another reason to get new shoes it when the screw bosses on the underside that accepts the cleat gets stripped or doesn't hold anymore. Oy, that got me thinking. I have two pair of commuter shoes, one pair of "mtn" shoes and one pair of road shoes. It hadn't really occurred to me, but yeah, the bosses on the road shoes caren't removeable. On the other three pairs, it's just a plate that sets in from above, after you remove the insole. Easily replaceable. But if the threads on the road shoes go bad, they're toast. Ick.

Do they have the recessed cleat? I have a pair of Shimano shoes with the recessed cleat that do nothing but squeak, and they may me want to rip my feet off and eat them right there on the spot!
