Take note this was done with measurements for a fork with 32mm stanctions.

What you will need:

1 roll of electrical tape

A ruler(not pictured)

Scissors

1 zip tie.

First step:

Measure out ~ a 4" peice of electrical tape:

2nd step:

Stick adhesive side of electrical tape to the backside of ziptie:

3rd step:
Fold both sides to the front of the ziptie:

4th step:
Check and see if any of the tape needs trimming, if not then zip it down to a point where it will slide on stanction easily, but will stay in position, shouldered side facing outside then cut off excess ziptie:

The electrical tape is smooth and slick enough that it won't ruin the finish on the stanctions.

Speaking for us lazy folks, probably not worth that much effort since the zip tie won't move once you've hit max amount of travel. Still, good way to pimp out the self applied travel indicating apparatus (made that up on the fly).

BTW...every steed in my stable has one of these on it. Lets me know when I'm bottoming out on crazy jumps and mad drops.

Anybody have any ideas on a DIY chainstay protector made with cloth?

i've seen people use a road tire cut into a piece the length of the chainstay and ziptied on.
works and looks pretty cool.

Will a plain zip-tie really damage a forks sanctions?
I just have a un-taped zip-tie on my Kona.

That's debatable. I usually take it off after I know the fork is sagged correctly and traveling normally. Adding the tape is a good idea but I prefer an O ring, just to lazy to install before the fork needs servicing. I like one o-ring on each stanction, one for all time max bottom out aww **** opps.

How so?

Fox, Marzocchi, and Roxshox stanchions must have a titanium nitride coating.;)
