There is an interesting article in the Times about opposition to the Grand Street bike lane and the need for any bike lanes in Staten Island.

http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/08/25/as-bike-lanes-proliferate-so-do-disputes/?apage=1

There is a lively debate after the article with about 90 people giving their thoughts on the matter.

Thank you for the link. Very interesting and also unnerving. I knew that some drivers would have a really hard time sharing the road but this is silly.

I live on planet Earth too. I live in NYC too. I pay my taxes that go to upkeep the same roads the motorists are destroying every second with their cars. I have a right to the road too and I'm claiming it. I suggest you all do the same.

I hate the "it is a great idea, but not in my neighborhood" as an argument for anything... It is so self centered and arrogant.

I live on this Earth, too,” he added, but he said bike commuting was unrealistic for Staten Island: “Almost no one — maybe Lance Armstrong — on the south shore is going to be commuting to work by bike.”

Hmmm..... I live on the South shore and commute to Brooklyn a few times a month.....I would do it more often if a car wasn't necessary for work most of the time.

It's typical thinking for Staten Island though. The land where the trash can is the world outside your car window and where any space that can fit a car is considered a lane.
