I am looking toward the dark cold days of winter I’m planning to move the cycle into the basement. I like to ride long distance for personal health and to clear the head. I am competitive with myself and seldom race. I’m not sure if I want / need a power meter like the CYCLE OPS or ergometer like CompuTrainer. What does each do? Help me decide which is best for me.

If you've been following a structured training program with HRM, doing monthly controlled tests, doing intervals, keeping track of your improvements, and you've come to notice a plateau in improvements, then I'd say it's time to get a power meter. If you don't do any of that already then you probably don't need a power meter. If you do all that but your performance improvements are still going strong (i.e., easily measurable), then you probably don't need a power meter yet but it doesn't hurt to get one early.
