Took a ride out to Jones Beach tonight (Wednesday) at 5pm for my annual stroll through the theater parking lot on Jimmy Buffet night. For anyone who has never been to the Jones Beach Theater parking lot the day of a Jimmy Buffet concert, you're missing one of the biggest spectacles of any Long Island summer.

The scene is indescribable. One tailgate set-up is more extravagant than the next; booze is flowing everywhere; guys are strolling around in grass skirts; bands are playing impromptu concerts in every row of parked vehicles...it's more of a party than the concert itself.

Mostly, the vibe this year was that, yeah, it's OK to celebrate life, even though life is not so great right now. At one point, standing with my bike in the middle of a huge crowd that was roaring for a guy playing a corny, but energetic drum solo, I was so overcome by emotion that I had to leave. Wussy.

Anyway, mark your calendar for next year's Jimmy Buffet show at the theater, and be sure to get down there for the pre-concert tailgate party.

Ah Yes the Parrot Heads :)
Actually Jimmy has a line about his 10 Speed in one of his songs.
Next year you gotta attach a shark fin to your helmet.

A few years ago I skated around the party there. This year some friends mentioned going but nobody called and I forgot and went to Queens for Indian food with SIL.
Sounds like fun and the weather cooperated!

Having made a point of riding out there for each of the past four concerts, I think this year's tailgate party had the best vibe of all. And as I said, being surrounded by all this great energy brought me right out of my funk for an hour. I think the ride back to Cedar Creek took about five minutes that night!
