Hi All,

I'm training for the MS bike ride from Irvine to San Diego, and I want to attempt the first 50 miles this weekend. Does anyone have a route slip, as far as which way I should go? I also want to go thru Camp Pendleton.

Thanks!
Rez

If you go through Camp Pendleton, make sure you have picture ID with you, and are wearing proper safety gear to get past the gate guards.

So, I need to purchase a helmet before going on this ride. Good to know, I need one anyways. Any other safety gear we would need?

No, sorry. How about Palomar Mtn?

ID, helmet, ride in single file and stop at signs and signals. That's it.

Huh? I cannot believe your MS training mates havent already mention needing to wear a helmet.

No rule saying you have to... but just keep in mind you will be riding on busy streets and highways and cars are way big and your head is way small... don't think of ever riding without a helmet (unless you don't care much about your head). Sorry for the public address annoucement... now back to riding...

BTW if planning to do 50 miles and wanting to go through Pendleton, I suggest you start at San Clemente. Ride 25 miles down, turn around and ride back. If you get off at Christianitos Rd. There is a parking lot for beach traffic next to Carl's Jr. that is a good staging area.

This where you start (see routeslip at 39.4 miles):

Where Ave. Presidente end, cross Cristianitos Rd, and just before freeway onramp get on bike path

Actually from the parking lot next to Carl's go South to Cristianitos turn right, just over the freeway on the left is the bike trail.

and the perfect place to stop and turn around at 65.3 miles:

At fork with Lincoln, stay right - Lunch Stop, area near Solana Beach Amtrak Station (look for station on left) just before 2nd intersection of PCH and County Highway S8

Due to our state budget problems, parking at that trestles lot is now $15 :twitchy: with a guard schack. Just a heads up. Some street parking available, but crowded now especially with the parking charge.
Parking was free in that lot until about a week and a half ago.

Park at the San Clemente Metrolink station and ride to the Oceanside station. It's almost exactly 50 miles RT but if you don't feel like riding back you can take a train.

Not bad advice on the San Clemente train station - just make sure you know which train. Amtrak stops at the pier and Metrolink stops a bit away. Not so bad on a bike, but worse for a pedestrian.

there are rules that say you have to; there are also rules that state what roads on Camp Pendleton you can and cannot ride on, and yes I have seen MPs pull over dudes on bikes for violating such rules. I've worked on Camp Pendleton for a few years, and MPs are rather ego-driven so I'd play by their rules.

Huh that sucks! I used that parking lot all the time. I guess a small price to pay for "secured" parking especially during the summer.

Helmets are required for the MS Ride. Otherwise I have to stop you from riding as part of the event...

Well thanks for the reminder. I was just trying to appease the folks who rant against helmets. And she is doing a training ride, not the actual MS ride so it can't be enforced.

I for one never ride without and assume the ride promoters ask that pariticipates wear one. Regardless if it is required, one should just never take the risk.

I understand, I just wanted to make sure the event rules were clarified. What people do on their own training rides is their concern, but when participating in an organized ride (charity or profit) there are generally rules.

For the MS Ride, I am one of the people charged with ensuring everyone is safely making it from Irvine to San Diego over the two days. Therefore, I request people to follow all the rules of the road when participating because if any one of the cities on the route decided to not renew the permits then $3 million dollars per year would be lost to medical research and assistance programs.

Blitzkrieg, Baby!!! and you did happen to call me a "Helmet Nazi" on the 60th anniversary of the German invasion of Poland...

Fortunately, it is too hot in SoCal to start another fire, especially when it is that close to my own place!
