Him-"The camera body is worth this much alone. Then add $495 for
the lens, Then $395 for the flash, the case. Well if I don't, then I
won't sell it and keep it. only losing the cost to post it here on
e-bay..
Thanks for your support :-) "
Me-"I'm not trying to be a jerk, but I just bought a mark II for $900..."
Him-"And what year was it? Was it a EOS-1D Mark II? No it wasn't.
Cannon has many mark II cameras in their EOS line.
How many shutter clicks?
What lens?
Get a Speedlite 580EX with that?
Glad you think you got a good deal. Truly hope you enjoy it and
take some photos that are nice to look at. "

you get that a lot in ebay.
i once saw a battered 1980 old steel bike, in pretty bad condition so not a lovingly pampered classic with a buy it now for £800 when others were going for £100 or less.
the descrption said it was a bargain because you can't get a road bike for much less than £1000 these days. oh i laughed and laughed.

Why bother contacting the seller unless you're making an offer?
For whatever reason I've gotten this a bunch on craigslist: someone writes me to tell me how much I should be asking for an item...no, not to make an offer, just to tell me what the price should be. Once I even had a lady show up to a yard sale where we had a car for sale, then proceeds to show us an eBay printout to prove we were asking too much for it.
WTF is up with people like that? The price is what it sells for, not what a similar item in a different size, totally different condition, sold by the ex-girlfriend out of spite, stolen item, etc. It's not like it was a counter-offer either, just some random online shopper comparing prices based upon what something else sold for on eBay, then "gifting" me with their insight...with no intent to buy. Since when has eBay ever been a realistic price comparision? How about the $800 X-Boxes? If you found the item at a better price...why didn't you buy it? How is it that my item is always worth exactly the same as one that sold for the lowest price ever found on the internet instead of an average?
Quit wasting my time. I am asking this much for this item, not something deemed similar by someone that obviously lacks good judgement, nor cares about my well-being. If it doesn't sell, I'll lower the price until it does, or decide that it's not worth selling for what is offered and keep it, plain and simple...and that's none of your effing business.

The discrepancy between what this person is asking and the fair market value for the product is so large that this guy is either a fraud or he is super misinformed. I was merely trying to inform him.
I'm inclined to think that he is simply misinformed because he claims that there are many "years" that canon made the 1D Mark II. Incorrect.
The price he has this listed at, you can get a 1D Mark III new, which is two models beyond the one he is selling.
There is over priced, and there is absurd. This is absurd. I'm not telling him what his price should be. I'm telling what it's not going to sell at.

Why bother?
Do you shop the MLS and call people to tell them they're asking too much for their house? Call people in the auto trader to tell them their classic car isn't as classic as they think it is? It's all uninvited opinion.
You are asking too much for this thread.

My apologies for not being more supportive of your benificence...or were you just mocking his asking price?
My mind is swimming in a pool of perturbation over the asking price.
He has the auction starting at $3500, with an unknown reserve which means he is likely expecting a fair bit more for this.
The camera is arguably worth $900-$1100 depending on how many times the shutter has actuated (I just bought one with a brand new shutter for $900, and i missed out on one on ebay that had a new shutter and sold for $810, and I nearly won another that has less than 4000 shots on it and sold for $910).
The lens is worth no more than $260
The flash is worth no more than $350
All the other stuff is moot
Thus, he has perhaps $1800 worth of gear there assuming the stuff is all in pristine condition. Therefore, his starting price point, which is less than what he actually wants to get for it, is 200% above fair market value.
He then informs me that there are "many years" of the 1D Mark II, which is an indication that he doesn't really know what he's selling. I figured I would try and help him. Apparently that makes me an opinionated *******.:roflmao2:
I would not say you are that opinionated.............

That's hilarious. I suppose some folks need to find a way to occupy their time in (what they believe is) a constructive manner. "I'll straighten that little whipper-snapper out!"

That's all fine and good Timmy, and I believe your price assessment based upon your obvious interest in equipment of this sort, but I still question what it is you wish to achieve?
Let's say you decided to sell that camera you bought for $900. What would be your starting price? Would it be more than what you paid? My guess is probably so, though a lot more fair than this guy's exorbitant amount.
Now, let's say you asked for $1200. That's a nice tidy profit and still fair compared to his price. Let's also say you put it up for auction, but when you do, someone that you don't know says they bought the exact same camera for $200 out of the back of a van in Detroit and tells you you're asking too much. How much credence would you put in this persons opinion? Would it change your mind about your price?
Keep in mind that as deluded as this guy may be about "real world" pricing, he paid a certain amount for it and wants to get most if not all of it back. He may not be able to do so...but what if he does? IMO, it's worth the chance on his part, and that's pretty much what his response was. Is he still wrong? Don't confuse the role of buyer and seller. Let him have his dreams...he may actually achieve them. Heck, if anything you should be encouraging the guy. If he gets his asking price, that just drives up the "going rate" for your camera when it's time to sell.

I have to say that I agree with WB here.
WHO CARES what he is asking for it?? Either it sells or it doesn't. If he does, good for him. If he doesn't then maybe he will learn to lower the price. The buyer has the power to inform himself. And that's hopefully what most people will do. People are not forced to buy the equipment, it's their choice!

Exactly. There is a guy near me who was trying to sell his house which was a dump. So he fixed up the master bedroom and ADDED the cost he put into the house to his selling price, and the rest of the house was still a dump. But even though he fixed the room and RAISED the price on his house, it sold right away after being on the market for over a year! The house was not only way over price for the 'hood if it were in normal condition, but it was a dump to boot and it still sold.
As far as the OP, I don't understand the effort put into this unless you wanted to actually buy it yourself and were trying to make a counter-offer based on certain knowledge only someone in-the-know would know.
The only experience I had with eBay was back when I would buy Mac computers as a hobby (we are talking about around the birth of eBay) and I was shocked how people were buying used iMacs/9600/6400s for MORE than they were brand new at a retailer. I didn't write to the sellers, instead I went to the retailer and bought one for way less.
