Probably none of you will care, but the guys just got done installing the window unit for me. I'm not sweating my but off posting here!!! I live on the top floor in an old brownstone, and the windows never had any thought for AC. They had to pull the top of a window out to put it in...

It's even got a remote control...

Now if it was in the room I sleep in, that would be something!

I am so MFing happy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i just got AC three weeks ago myself! it's so nice. mine is a window unit with a remote as well. the remote is key i've found. it's nice to lay in bed and change the fan speed, temp, etc. without getting up. now i just need to find someone to feed me and i'll have no reason to ever leave the house. :)

I know that everybody used to live without it, but I am a native of the Southeastern U.S. and am a big believer in A/C. Even if you only run a small window unit part of the time, I say if you got the electricity, then crank that thing up.

Sidenote: we live in a house where the original owners, two ultra-frugal old sisters, never used any form of it. No window units, not even fans; they just kept the screened windows open. We had a kick-ass central unit installed, and today, it is in the low nineties and maybe 78% humidity. No A/C??

no a/c isn't THAT bad.

I prefer ceiling fans, not only are they more genteel, I can't take the 20 degree temperature drop when moving from 85 to 65. I feel like I am entering a refrigerator.

We have both central air and fans. We very rarely use the air conditioner.

I hear ya, I was worried I wouldn't be able to afford a new AC for my apartment (it needs a wall unit, while I have 2 window units), but I happened to go to Atlantic City and won $600... just enough to buy a 12,000BTU unit. It was awesome, now I just hope I can afford the electricity bills.

How'd you end up with 2 window units for an apartment that only accepts a wall unit?
I've got a panasonic unit that's EER rated at 11. It's 6000 BTU and only uses 550 watts, good enough to cool like 1000 sq ft if you keep the windows and doors closed, it'll take about 15 min to cool everything down but its good enough.

Wow - it did make a huge difference. Since I live my life on the third shift, the days during the summer can get way too hot - today I think I got the best sleep that I've had since summer started!!! It hasn't been too hot so far this summer, but I was dreading august. The humidity out here in Minneapolis just gets to be too much for me. I hate trying to sleep when I'm sticky...

The only bummer I can think of is that I have a week of vacation coming up starting on Friday, and I know I'll end up just sitting in my air conditioned box not wanting to go out and get sun :|

I have 2 window units from the apt. I had when I was engaged to be married and living with my wife-to-be.

After we broke up I ended up with the cats and the air conditioners, and I had to move because I couldn't afford $1,300 rent on my own.

Anyway, the new apt. takes a wall unit, won't fit window AC's.

Haha so you just have 2 window units lying around? Well I suppose they make for good ottoman's to put your feet up on.

a nice side effect of A/C is that is drowns out some of the street noise. this is a huge bonus living in a large city. the kids around here play in the streets until well after midnight.

Get yourself a pair of etymotics or shure's and some piano music, that'll shut those kids up good when you're trying to sleep.

It is 95F degrees here today, and the hottest weather has not even hit yet. Sometimes it gets up to 110F. I cannot even imagine what it would be like w/o central air conditioning in my house and at work.

Congrats on the a/c, HereNT!

Yeah, I'm still loving it... We've been pretty tame for temps out here, but it's still nice... next summer will probably be worse. The thing that gets you in Minnesota is the humidity though - it's lower temps than back in Montana, but it 'feels' a LOT hotter when the sweat doesn't evaporate...

I've had times where I went in early and left late at work simply for the fact that they had a climate controlled environment (they control humidity too at a lot of print shops) - now those days are over...
