Northern California - Gauging interest for a Mt. Madonna ride

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Okay interest has been shown and so the ride is on for Saturday September 12. Meet up at 8:00am here:

Starbucks
624 Blossom Hill Rd, Los Gatos, CA‎ (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=624+Blossom+Hill+Rd,+Los+Gatos,+CA+95032&sll=37.252749,-121.934091&sspn=0.013425,0.025814&ie=UTF8&z=17&iwloc=A)

The route: http://bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=81622

Original post follows:

I did this loop solo back in June and liked it enough to want to do it again and make a BF group ride out of it. Personally I think it's a great loop through some very scenic and car-free roads. That said I recognize it might not be for everyone due to:

* Relatively long distance (88 miles and maybe 7000 feet of climbing)
* A couple dirt sections (about 3 miles total)

Anyway without further ado here is the route (click to view at gmap-pedometer.com):
http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/8505/mtmadonna.jpg (http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=3109728)

This ride starts at the Starbucks on Blossom Hill road in Los Gatos and then follows the loop clockwise. Here's a rundown of some significant points:

Miles 8.5-10: Get the legs warmed up on the steep part of Hicks Rd
Miles 16-34: Mostly flat terrain along McKean, Uvas, and Watsonville roads. There should be a prevailing tailwind
Mile 34: Fill up water bottles at Chitactac-Adams park
Miles 39-40.5: The pavement on Mt. Madonna road ends and becomes hard packed dirt for 1.5 miles. This section is all uphill and climbs 700' for an average grade of 8.8% Totally doable on a road bike IMO
Miles 42-46: Descend the west side of Hecker Pass. Keep up with cars! Lots of fun.
Mile 49: Stop at the Casserly store for water and food or snacks before hitting beautiful Hazel Dell Rd
Mile 57: Another possible food and water stop at the Corralitos market.
Miles 57-74: Eureka Canyon Rd and Highland Way. This is a gradual climb along that starts by following a creek under a canopy of trees. Eventually the tree cover gives way and the road levels off around 2000' following the edge of a hill with views of the ocean, tree-covered hills, and not much else. It feels very remote.
Mile 74: Summit store, another great place to get snacks.
Miles 77-80: Descent of Old Santa Cruz Hwy. Very smooth pavement and sweeping turns mean you can blast down with hardly a touch of brakes
Miles 85-86.5: More offroading on the Los Gatos Creek trail. This is gravel and mostly downhill. It is doable but tricky on a road bike.

I was thinking of doing this on September 12th or 13th. I know this is a ways in the future and also the same weekend as the Auburn Century. But I wanted to stake my claim to a weekend early enough to not have them all get taken by other BF rides

So with all the scary dirt sections is anyone interested in doing something like this? There aren't really many options to shorten the ride but there are plenty of ways to lengthen it to a century or add another thousand feet of climbing or more :)

I salute you.

ohhh, this would be a perfect ride for me, we're neighbors and I have always wanted to climb Mt. Madonna (grew up in Gilroy). I will be in Ukiah winemaking that weekend instead, shoot.

Long distance, dirt sections, relatively car free... wild horses couldn't keep me away. Count me in.

If I'm not working this weekend I'm in. Need something longish before Knoxville the following weekend.

I grew up in Santa Clara - now live in SoCal. Sounds like an interesting ride - I'll make not of it and maybe use portions next time I visit and stay in Morgan Hill.

I am very interested in this but I'm on-call that weekend! Augh. I have done the first couple of legs of this but I didn't know about the Eureka Canyon - Highland Way connector to Summit. Looks awesome.

I'm out ... it was either this or Marco's Hamilton ride ... can't do both. Oh well. Have fun!

Well this was planned for next weekend (September 12) so no more excuses ;) But I might postpone it even one more weekend to stagger out my long rides since I'll probably end up doing Marco's ride tomorrow.

Sucks about the on-call. How about the following saturday the 19th?

Yep now you're talking.

I would probably skip hicks and just take camden around to almaden -> mckean. i hate hicks and doing it that early in the ride would chew up energy I'd rather save for the santa cruz climbs.

This has the added advantage that my Kish bike will be ready...

Whatever you need to do is fine but I can't make it on the 19th as I plan on doing the Knoxville Double. Keep me posted.

Sounds like fun, but will be volunteering at Knoxville on the 19th, and will be out of town all this weekend.

Have fun, if this ride happens, and be sure to report how it goes :)

So what's the status of this? It turns out I will be in town this weekend, but looks like there were plans to postpone this a week? I'll be out of town the 19th.

To all who have expressed interest I will aim to post back here tonight with a definite date for this ride. Still trying to figure out how my weekends are going to shape up for the rest of the month. Right now I'm leaning toward the original date of September 12th but gotta check with the SO first.

Anyway for the time I was thinking 8:00am. Perhaps a bit on the early side considering that beating the heat shouldn't be an issue. But hey the days are getting shorter and it's nice riding in the early morning anyway :)

Also I wanted to reiterate that this ride will be on paved roads for over 95% of the route. The dirt segments are easier than the Montebello to Page Mill connector in case anyone has done that. So don't be too scared of it. The main drawback is your bike will be dusty afterward :)

Okay one more thought ... Since quite a few people will be unavailable on the 12th and 19th how does the 26th work?

I'm 80% on any of the three proposed days.

Was going to clean my trek but will do it after this ride. What are the steepest sections? Might have to switch some of the cogs and crank.

Seems like we keep missing each other. Maybe one day we can do an epic commute but I need to go to bed earlier for that to work out

I don't think so. I was planning to stop at a little county park at mile 34 for water. This is right before the Mt. Madonna climb. So if you can make it past Kennedy and Hicks (10 miles) plus another 24 flattish miles (ok, there are a couple rollers) on just water bottles you'll be fine.

So aside from that initial long stretch there are plenty of other hydration spots along the way.
