Road Cycling - Izumi shorts size advise needed.

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
I was in my lbs yesterday and purchased a pair of Ultra-sensor shorts, size large. I wear size 34 pants and the Izumi size chart shows Medium = 33 and large = 35/36. When I tried them on at home they fit o.k. but maybe a little sag in the rear. I am afraid that they may stretch out a little. They still have the tags on them and I could still take them back. Does anyone else have a 34 waist? Which way did you go, a little tighter or looser. Thanks
You would actually go tighter, however you are suppose to assume the
biking position when trying them on, so whats baggy while standing erect
will most likely not be baggy when your riding. Hope that helps ya!
I have a 34 waist and wear medium PI shorts. I bought a pair of their lower end short in large and found the same problem you have. They were my first pair of shorts so I had ridden in them a few times before coming to this realization.

For what it's worth, I have a 32 waist and I wear a pair of medium Pearl Izumi attack shorts.
I'm a 34 waist (6' tall) and I wear size Large PI shorts and bibs. No complaints.

i recently bought a pair of pearl heliarc bibs
i am 6ft 185-190 lbs and have a 33 to 34 waist
the large bibs were a tiny bit loose but i dont like "over tight" (and the mediums brought tears to my eyes) so i went with the large
BIG mistake
unlike my xl grand assos bibs which are still comfortable to wear despite the fact i weigh 35 lbs less now verses when i bought them....these pearl bibs just dont fit that well...and my weight is unchanged
if they dont fit "just right" ...they will bunch up at all the wrong places...and they do not have the compliance or range of fit that my assos ones do
one of the mechanics at my lbs has a similar build to mine and experienced the same thing
don't get me wrong...they are well made and have an excellent chamois...but i would recommend buying them only if they are an exact fit
When I tried them on at home they fit o.k. but maybe a little sag in the rear.
I've noticed the "sag" problem with all PI shorts. That's why I stopped buying them.
Have you tried any other brands?
Check out Voler (http://www.velowear.com/store/products.asp?dept=1019) or my personal favorite, Etxe Ondo (http://www.bicyclinghub.com/bicyclinghub/etonolshor.html). Both have accurate sizing charts.
If you really want to experience comfort while riding, try some bibs. No waist band or draw string.
I've given away all my shorts and have 8 pairs of bibs.

32" waist, 5'8", 180 lbs. but relatively big legs which means I'm normally wearing 33-34's and keeping them up with a belt. I tried on Performance Ultra bibs in both medium and large and found the larges way too long (oh, my thick legs are short too). They bunched just about everywhere. The mediums are tight on my legs and maybe just a smidge short but they fit a whole lot better than the larges. Definitely no sag. Haven't tried PI's yet though.
