When I asked the homeowner hosting a garage sale if she had any older bikes, she said no, but her friend spoke up and said she had one at home she'd sell if I made a good offer. I agreed to look and gave her and her husband a ride back to their house to see. Unfortunately, it was buried in the rear of their garage so full of junk it was impossible to walk back to look at it. She assured me it was all original, a 1945 Elgin; her husband said it was bought right after WWII (so maybe 1946?) and mentioned that the saddle had been eaten by a raccoon (!). All I could see of it from the open garage door is that it was faded red. She wanted $20. I demurred at first but phoned a couple hours later and agreed to meet their price, and to meet tomorrow (Friday) to give him time to excavate it from the garage.
My question: assuming it is intact other than the raccoon-chewed saddle, am I overpaying? Even if, say, only the frame or handlebars are usable -- would you say $20 is reasonable?
