ok, i baught what i was lead to believe was an 04 trek, but the catch is, that the only year that has a similar paint scheeme is the 95. did i get bamboozled or was the seller merely mistaken?

While the seller was trying to get you to buy the bike, did he seem like he was trying to hold back laughter?
Was he laughing as u left with the bike?
Did u hear him mumble "i think i got him now" while showing u this bike?

If you said yes to any of these, than u got bamboozled. Who cares its happened to all of us.

Trek 830's have been around for years and the bikes have not changed much in that time. The bike frame is indestructable- so whether you bought an 04 or a 95 does not make a great deal of difference. Only thing to worry about is whether you got a deal on the price that was good irrespective of year- or not.

BikePedia only lists the Trek 830 through 1999. So, I guess there was no 2004 model. :rolleyes:

Same thing I was going to say. You may not have the model you thought, but if you like the bike, it doesn't matter. I have an Atlantis and a Rambouillet (about $3000 each if I had to replace them now; I didn't pay nearly that), but when I just want to ride a bike, I'm as likely to hop on an old Trek I've had for 15 years. Just go ride.

pretty sure you've got an older model there. First clue is no suspension fork.

That looks a LOT like my 97 version.

It's a 1995 for sure. Center pull cantilever brakes have been gone since 1997. There was no 830 in 1998, and the 1999 model had an aluminum frame.

A '95 will be a steel frame. An '04 will be an aluminum frame.(I think)
You have a 1995.

Look at the codes stamped into the components. (Derailleurs) Then go to this site:

It's always possible that a DR manufactured in say, 96 might be on a '97 bike, but usually it's pretty close.
