What's the best place to watch a race? At the transitions? Do people do the cowbell stuff they do with cycling races? Just curious. Watching a few friends this weekend.

Your best bet is to start off at the water and cheer them as they head in. Then get to a place near their transition spot or somewhere near the bike exit - either is fine. If you are near their transition area then you can give them close-up personal encouragement and even get a feel for how they are doing after the swim. If you go to the bike exit then it will just be a quick "GO ???" and then they're gone.

Then you can either go walk a little ways into the bike finish to cheer them into the transition. This is always nice because there are fewer people around and the cheers are personal and it is great to actually be able to see your supporters. Or you can head to their transition area and cheer them on there. Once again this gives you the chance to give them a quick personal bit of encouragement and find out how they feel.

Finally, you can either find a spot near the end of the run to give them a cheer. These are good but often go unnoticed due to the many people just cheering at random. Or you can head down past the finish line and wait for them to cross and have a cold bottle of water and a big hug waiting for them.

Over all it really depends on the set-up of the event. Some are very compact and allow for lots of easy cheering in the transitions and start/finish areas. Others are spread out and you have to really plan your spots.

One last thing. Talk to your friends to find out how long they expect to be for each leg of the event. This will give you a good idea of when to be where. Get to your spots early...they might be having a great day and you don't want to miss them.

Have fun.

Thanks. Exactly what I wanted to know. I might skip the hug part... but other than that, spot on.
