Just picked up the car from the garage in preparing to move. I dare say it was exhilarating working through the gears in the manual transmition. Are my plans to go car-lite/free after the move doomed?
I leave my Miata on blocks for 6 months at a time.
But I've gotta say, god driving that thing is fun.
Living a completely car free life is an impossibility for me, elderly parents, hauling photographic gear/lights, farm needs a truck, the jet-set life and all that.
A car lite life/non-disposable/self sustained existence is a noble goal as well.
I doubt you are doomed.
I use my car about once every three weeks. It's nice to have one to be able to drive to the back country, to cycling events and for hauling very heavy or very bulky loads.
It's also nice not to worry about finding a park, or driving during rush hour during the week.
Basically, you're doomed. The Law of Irony states that as soon as you start driving, you'll get a charley horse from reaching for the gas peddle.
Just remember, you brake with your feet...

The thrill will last till a little light on the dashboard goes on or you hear that odd grinding sound. ;) Then you'll come rushing back to the dependable bike. :thumb:

I realized this week that it has been over a year since I drove a car.
If you like driving a car keep doing it. I like driving too, that is until I must buy fuel. The cost of fuel seems so expensive. If driving cost about sixty cents per mile for fuel, the car, and everything else, it would cost me about $5.50 for every grocery trip and more to go downtown. I'm too cheap to pay that much money to move my body a few miles.
The actual cost for me would be much more if I owned a car because when I owned one I rarely drove it.

Dude, the whole bleeping planet is doomed, because YOU drove.
(really, I mean, there is not enough melodrama in just saying that YOU are doomed for having driven.)
Whether or not you go car free or car lite is your choice. If you're doing the car lite thing, you're probably aware that sometimes it's very difficult to avoid the temptation to use a car whenever it's convenient.
Best of luck in whatever you choose.

If they weren't so busy posing for the camera, they wouldn't have run over Dino.
