We were coming home today from our usual ride. We were all feeling good and had just chased a tandem for about 6 miles of downhill. We were pacelining the usual stop sign - to - stop sign flat, and as I moved up to take my turn at the front, I got what I thought was a noisey flat. Turned out I had a screw in my tire. It had entered the "tread" sideways, but didn't get to the tube. I backed it out and finished the last 5 miles without incident.

I guess if it's not through the full thickness of the tread then the tire is still usable. Weird!

I had exactly the same thing happen on an auto, but never on a bike. You lucked out:thumb:

Aren't you the guy..? Yes you are... Who asked about the jinx a while ago? Murphy is knocking at your door!

I figured out that what happened to me was my front tire rolled over a wood screw that caused it to flip into position, and go straight into my back tire! Right in the center of the tread. I almost had a new spoke hole in the rim, but it ended up in an existing spoke hole. I was able to save the broken off piece that was in the hollow rim on the way home. What a mess.

You're rather lucky it seems.

You better buy a lottery ticket before the spell wears off.

Couple dabs of Shoe Goo and that baby'll be just like new

Screwing around during a ride, huh? :p

Glad you weren't injured, and little damage occurred. Cool pic

Glad no damage was done, this sounds vaguely familiar.

The shackle pictured above got lodged on my rear tire on a ride a while back. I never saw it in the road and had no idea what was wrong as the bike ground to a halt in about 30 ft. The tire didn't skid and no damage was done outside scrubbing the logo off of the tire. You can see the remains of the logo in the picture. Fortunately, I was alone at the time, if I had been in a paceline or with anyone behind me, the results would have been quite different.

It was quite hard to remove the shackle before I could go on, I found a stick and pried it off. I thought I was going to have to deflate the tire.

I'm not sure which is more amazing, the shackle or the screw. Or the fact we had cameras with us.
