Hybrid Bicycles - How hybrid are your wheels?

The wheels on my H300 combine elements from many different kinds of bikes. Front rim is a 27in Wobler Modele 58 drilled for Shrader (touring or maybe tandem considering the forty spokes). Rear is a 700c Mavic MA3 drilled for presta (road) laced to a Shimano Deore XT hub (mountain). 27in, 700c, Schrader, Presta, quite the cross pollination of technologies, eh?

I'm not sure what constitutes hybrid tires, but, my hybrid has:

Kenda K197 700 x 35c

My Raleigh Superbe has Mavic Touring Wheels drilled for Presta valves and fitted with Continental Top Touring 700 X 32C Tires. The conversion made it my first hybrid.

My Crosstrail has a 32 hole Alex CT rim, with a Shimano Deore hub, and a Schwalbe Marathon Supreme, 700CX35, on the front, with an Alex Adventurer 36 (eyeletted) hole rim, on a Shimano Deore Hub, with a Schwalbe Marathon Supreme, 700CX40, on the back. Schrader Valves feed air to both tires.

Nice combo.

My customized hybrid has wheels, hand built by yours truly, using Mavic A719 rims - 32 hole. Built 3X - laced. Shimano Ultegra hubset. And DT 14-15-14 double-butted spokes and brass nipples. Solid as a rock. For tires I am running Rivendell Ruffy Tuffy 700 X 27C tires. Just about bombproof. Never needs truing.

The wheelsets for my Trek:

Stock Bontrager hubs and rim rear and a Formula wheel up front - II use these for of road and winter riding... they have 700:35 Schwalbe CX Compe tyres mounted up and these are also very nice road tyres as they roll out very quickly at 75 psi.

My other wheelset is a 135 mm Deore hub laced 32/3 to a Mavic MA40 (rear) and the front is a beautiful 40 spoke Sansin tandem hub laced to another Mavic MA40 with 700:28 Schwalbe Marathons which are better for speed but give up a little ride quality compared to the cross tyres.

Both wheelsets have taken monstrous use and abuse and have been flawless in doing what they do.

Sixty, do my tires stats mean anything? I don't have a flippin' clue about tires.

Your Asama runs 700c wheels (French designation for a 622 wheel) and will have a sidewall marking of 622:x with x being the actual tire width in mm and 622mm being the bead seat diameter.

007, I'm interested in the Rivendell tires. I read about them in another of your posts. I had never heard of tires with the Rivendell name on them. I'm planning on looking for some when I need new tires.

Before "flat bar road bikes" hybrids were built with 135mm rear axle spacing. When I wore out the stock rear wheel on my Cannondale H300, I wanted to upgrade to a narrower rim, but prebuilt road rim laced to mtb hub is hard to find. Luckily I found a new Mavic rim and a new XT hub in my parts stock. I don't remember if I recycled spokes (oh, horror!) or bought new ones for that project.

My flat bar road bike came with few spoke off brand wheels but they held up quite well. When they wore out, I replaced them with a Cane Creek Strados wheelset from here.

Straight spokes, nipples inside hub, radial laced front, three cross drive side, radial non-drive rear. Conti Gatorskins 700x28.

32 spoke Deore/Mavic rear and forty spoke front? What an odd coincidence! Maybe my set up isn't as weird as I though. Is the front radial laced? :) I'm jealous of the matching rims.

Yes they are hybrid tires, but if you spend much time at 18mph or faster, you would benefit from the aerodynamic advantage of narrower tires. Your rims might be too wide for narrower tires though.

I picked up the Sansin wheel (40/3 cross) in a pre-built state and wanted to match up the rims... I had an NOS 32 spoke Mavic MA40 and laced it it a 32 spoke mtb hub and since I am no Clyde that 32 spoke wheel should be just fine.

I knew the guy who built the Sansin wheel and have complete faith in what is one of the nicest built wheels I have ever run (that was not my own build)... it is meant to be used on a loaded tandem so for a single person bike it is serious overkill.

I define a hybrid tire as one that can handle multiple surfaces well.

"Complete faith in the build." Haha, I always have that, but I should have checked out the last wheel I bought (second hand, new condition) before riding it. It fell apart within a week of use. I put it in the truing stand, tightened up the spokes and it's been running true for a couple months now on my work horse.

i got the same wheels on my bike that come on the higher end trek madone road racing bikes... so im going to say my wheels aren't that hybrid... LOL
