A friend of mine used to race and stated that when he was racing (this was over 10 years ago) all riders were required to be part of some uscycling team/club/group and that the jerseys could not be sleeveless. Are these rules still in effect?

Oh, one other thing .... how do the travel vouchers you get by buying a license work? I think it's pretty cool that you get free travel just by being a licensed cyclist.

Yes, you need to a member of a club or you will be forced to pay an "unattached" rider fee. I say forced beacuse there is not a rule in the rulebook that states promoters must charge this fee.
Yes, your jersies must have sleeves, and do not show up with a jersey of a pro team, the polka dotted jersey, a world champion jersey, or any jersey that you would have to earn to wear.

If riding unattached, you must wear a plain, solid color jersey. You are not allowed to wear the jersey of a team you are not currently affiliated with: pro or amateur.

Oh! And don't go trying to fold in the edges of that number to make it smaller, either!

The 'unattached' fee isn't much... usually around $5.00. I think it is generally used for insurance coverage that would normally be part of your club membership. FWIW, many racing clubs will let non-members claim membership for the purpose of entering a race or two... just be sure to check and get club permission first.

Good to know, what's the reasoning behind being required to wear a jersey with sleeves? Everything else is pretty understandable but I simply prefer the comfort of a sleeveless jersey :o

The race official will inspect, or at least eyeball, ,your bike. Make sure you have both bar end plugs and that there are no broken parts showing on your bike. For instance, I know one of my bottle cages won't pass muster. The top piece is missing.
