Just got a report from Ray that New York route 218 between West Point and Cornwall-on-Hudson has been blocked by rock slides, so the road is closed until they repair it.

One of the most spectacular roads on the East coast for riding, cut into the side of Storm King Mountain, hanging over the Hudson river.

It gets blocked by rock slides every few years. And then they repair it -- but it could be closed for a long time. Look forward to hearing reports of when it's open again.

Drat!
I was hoping to ride up there in the next couple weeks (9W > Mine Rd > 293 > 218 > Mountain Rd > 9W).

I've never been on 9W between Bear Mtn circle & Cornwall; on the map, it looks like it's 4-lane, divided highway. Is it horrible to ride on?

Also on the map... it looks like you can take Bog Meadow Rd/Reservoir Rd to connect from 293 to 9W - where Mountain Rd intersects it. Any idea if that road is paved?

If you stay on 9W at Highland Falls going north the first, say, 8 miles will change how you look at riding. As in: "I really hate riding a bike". It is just a killer series of hills. Is it horrible to ride on? In my opinion it is what comes after horrible.
I like to go through the Military Academy and get onto 218 but you will have to talk your way onto it. I've gone through about 6 times but pretty much had to beg each time. Otherwise just go 9W to 218.

It is a beautiful, fantastic section of how I go from NYC to Newburgh, cross to Beacon and take the train home. FYI get onto Shore Road at Cornwall for a slightly more scenic route, but you will have to get back onto 9W a little south of Newburgh.

Anyone know if this has been cleaned up and opened?

I just spoke with a woman in the Cornwall On Hudson town office and she told me that she was "pretty sure it's open". She hadn't heard that it had been closed earlier so I'm not sure what to think.

Any news out there?

We drove 218 from Cornwall-on-Hudson south towards Bear Mountain this past Sunday a.m. and the road was open.
