General Cycling Discussion - Electric Bikes on Philadelphia Transit?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I posted this on the Electric Bike forum, but I noticed there were some previous Philly-specific threads on this General Discussion forum, so I figure there are more Philadelphians here.

SEPTA is the Philadelphia, PA area transit authority. Their website says no "motorized" bicycles are permitted on their vehicles, but they don't get into gasoline versus electric. From one point of view, obviously, a motor is a motor, but I'm thinking that because in Pennsylvania law an electric assisted bicycle is just a bicycle, not a motor vehicle, SEPTA should take them. Anybody ever tried it, and what if any reaction did you get from the staff?

If it's electric, and hidden behind panniers, I doubt they'd even know!

SEPTA is very liberal on their bicycle policies and I doubt they will reject an electric bicycle. If there are no platforms, you may have difficulty carrying the bike on and off.

Yeah go for it...you'll still have the problem of fitting the bike onto the vehicle, since with the commuter trains they make you roll it all the way to the back, which means rolling it down the incredibly skinny aisle, past a whole lot of irritated people.
