Commuting - Long Ride Home

I left work on July 29 around 11:30PM and didn't get home for another 19 days. I managed to get hit by a car about 10 minutes after leaving from work. Some background; it was night time, it was raining (moderately) when I left; I was told that the rain increased to a heavy down pour about the time of the accident? I was riding with lights fore and aft. Light & Motion arc hid light very bright and two super blinkies's on the rear. I haven't any recollection of the accident or the for next 48 hrs either. I was conscious enough to tell the police who I was and where I lived at the scene. The final tally was numerous broken ribs, clavicle, shattered scapula, punctured lung and numerous cuts minor fractures to my face. I'm home now healing for what I hope will be a complete recovery although that isn't a certainty. I'm making plans to buy another bike, mine is too damaged. I should say that the car that struck me was traveling from the opposite direction and was crossing my lane to enter a parkway onramp when we collided. I don't know what if anything you will learn that may help you avoid the same fate except my wife feels I should have had her pick me up that night. I traveled the same road every work day and although I don't remember the accident I know enough to realise if the driver didn't see me coming there isn't anything I could do. I always felt I would get hit one day, I had too many close calls to think it would never happen. Now I hope I never have another one because I was lucky to survived this time. I loved my rides to and from work and had been doing it for over a year riding in all seasons. That's my story, I'll let you know how I'm doing as I recover. By the way I'm open to suggestions for a new bike. I was riging a Surly LHT and probably will buy another because I was very happy with it.

It is particularly unfortunate that you don't remember the incident, it would be useful, for us as well as you, to know what, if anything, you could have done to avoid it.

Any further information that returns to you, or you learn as the investigation proceeds, would be appreciated. Assuming you can tell us without screwing up any claims you may have pending.

Although I don't remember the accident I ride the same way home almost always and there isn't any reason to believe I did anything out of the ordinary. I ride the white line that marks the shoulder, I think the car may have had trouble seeing because of heavy rain and all the light in the area that may have been reflecting light on the windshield. Why I don't remember anything of the accident is a bit strange; I was conscious after the accident although I was told I had a mild concussion, I didn't mention earlier but of course I was wearing a helmet which was important because my head or body took out his windshield.

What of the driver? Was it a hit and run or did he stop? It sounds like scary stuff; but hopefully it won't keep you too long away from bikes. Rest up and feel better!

Man, sorry to hear it.
I guess all of us are at risk of the same type of thing happening, so we continue to do what we can to avoid preventable accidents.
The unpredictable stuff is really scary.
