Good deal, bought 21spd GT from a thrift store a couple yrs ago for $20. On the left grip shifter, it's always been on 1. Won't hold 2 or 3, simply falls back to 1. I can hold it lined up with 2 or 3 while riding but that's no good. I jammed folded cardboard between front derailleur and frame to always use the center sprocket. Man that derailleur spring is strong and crushes the cardboard over time, should have used a piece of wood. An easy fix on the grip?? Thanks in advance--

You need to replace it. They aren't expensive and easily found. Unlike rear shifters, front shifters really hasn't changed too much.

There is a metal or plasic spring in the shifter that clicks into the different positions. Its proberly broken. It might be fixable but you will have to dissaseble the shifter and find something to replace the broken spring.
The older gripshifts are not too easy to reasseble so it might be easier just to chuck it and get a cheap replacement.

If you just want to use one sprocket and never shift just space it out with cardboard loosen the cable clamp nut and pull the slack cable through then tighten the nut and remove the cardboard. There might also be enough adjusment on the limit screws(little screws on the mech than adjust the limits the mech can move to) to hold the mech in the correct position
