Cycle Wild is leading our annual trip to the beach, on Labor Day Weekend! That's right, we're going to meet at the end of the MAX in Hillsboro and ride 71 miles to Cape Lookout State Park, home to the best hiker/biker camp in the whole state park system. Plenty of room, fully separated from the rest of the camping areas, quiet, within sight of the ocean, and shaded amongst the trees. Come join us!

Prior trips have had about 10-15 campers, and we play at the beach, go hiking, sit around the campfire and roast smores, hot dogs (or veggie dogs), and have a few drinks with friends. (yes, state parks permit alcohol)

We will be stopping at Safeway in Tillamook to buy our food, so there's no need to haul your food 71 miles unless you have very specific dietary needs.

We are riding out Saturday, staying at the beach all day Sunday, and returning on Monday (Labor Day).

Just the Facts:
Who: Cycle Wild
What: Bike Camping
Where: Cape Lookout State Park, 12 miles SW of Tillamook
When: September 5-7, 2009. Meet at Hatfield Government Center MAX Station (Hillsboro) at 7:45am, we ride at 8am.
How Far: 71 miles one-way
How Much: $10 ($8 to State Parks for 2 nights in the hiker/biker camp, $2 to chip in for firewood) - Cycle Wild charges nothing for our trips, you are responsible for paying your own park fees, chipping in with others on anything communal (like firewood), and taking care of your own food.

I know some of you aren't coming - for you, this is just informational.

Short skinny - we're going to Champoeg State Park from Hillsboro, 38.77 miles and we may try to hit a winery on the way down if one is open - we're riding through Yamhill County wine country! This also gives us the option to bug out for home on Sunday morning if the weather is really bad. We're still meeting at 8am, in case there are some who don't get this message in time.

------
If that's all you needed to know - congratulations! Stop reading, and we'll either see you in Hillsboro at 8am, or not. Call 503.781.5095 if you're running late, have questions, or need to get a hold of me.

Thanks! Hope to see you there! Details follow for the curious.

The details:

Weather forecast for the weekend:

Saturday Hillsboro: 90% chance rain, high 68, wind SSW 5-10mph
Saturday en-route: 90% chance rain, high 66, wind SSW 6-11mph
Saturday Cape Lookout: 90% chance rain, high 58, wind S 13-21mph (gust 26)
Saturday Night: 70% chance showers, low 56, wind S 14-18mph (gust 24)
Sunday: 80% chance showers, high 60, wind S 22mph (gust 29)
Sunday Night: 60% chance showers, low 56
Monday Cape Lookout: 30% chance showers, high 60
Monday en-route: 30% chance showers, high 68
Monday Hillsboro: 30% chance showers, high 70

In other words, rain, rain, and more rain, hella wind at the coast, and below 60. Not fun.

Results of the poll:

5: Go to the coast anyway
4: Bag it
3: Champoeg
2: Stub Stewart
2: Anything other than Champoeg or Stub Stewart
2: Show up in Hillsboro and decide there
1: None of the above

If everyone present in the morning decides they want to go to the coast anyway, hell with the rain and the wind, then we'll go, but otherwise we're going to Champoeg. Why? It's under 40 miles, it has services less than 10 miles away, it has brand new restrooms and showers (which also means a new hot water heater), and we haven't been there this year. Also, it's close enough that we can go home on Sunday if the weather totally sucks, and then enjoy a Labor Day BBQ somewhere.

So that's the basics - hope to see you out there, sorry the weather sucks!
