Living Car Free - It's like Critical Mass, but sponsored by "The Man"

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

TD Bank is a very large and wealthy corporation, collaborating with our local Bicycle Coalition to put on an event that seems to resemble Critical Mass in some of its rhetoric. A friend of mine forwarded this message from them.

It seems a lot like Critical Mass except
1) They probably got permission from the government and it looks like they'll be shutting down a bunch of streets for the event
2) you pay $45 or more per adult participant

What do you get for your $45? Water, snacks, access to toilets, and a "free" t-shirt!

Dear Amy,

Due to technical problems with our webpage, you may have had problems registering for TD Bank Bike Philly. To make sure no one misses out on the free t-shirt, we are extending our pre-registration deadline so take four minutes to register now!

Would you like to bike through the heart of Philadelphia surrounded by bicyclists instead of cars? Are you curious about what a bicycle traffic jam of thousands of bikes feels like? Find out by riding the certified car-free TD Bank Bike Philly on September 13.

Check out the four ride options that range from laid-back family-friendly routes on car-free streets to a challenging 50-mile option on shared roads.

Your registration supports the Bicycle Coalition's work to make your ride better better in Southeastern Pennsylvania, South Jersey and Delaware. Thank you for helping to make bicycling better!

Happy (Certified Car-Free) Bicycling!

Maria Dziembowska, Events Director

PS If you already registered for TD Bank Bike Philly, thank you! Would you tell a friend about riding certified car-free?

Sarcastically, I think.

Because the organizers of this ride make the claim that it is a "certified car free" ride, whatever that means. This claim shows up three times in the quoted text in post#1.

I'm willing to bet someone will get the bike rack out and drive to this.

Has anyone done this ride before??? I've always been busy but i wanted to jump in this year. There's no way I'm paying $45 though.

The "man" in this case is one of the major banks in Canada which has been doing business (and trying to do even more...) in the US for the last number of years.

Interesting that they are funding this event. Either the local TD is run by a mad cyclists or perhaps they see the new car-free dynamic as their best in-road to do business. Betcha they know we'll all be driving Treks in 10 years.

Bicycle riding has become a sort of fad among those who don't own cars.

It could just be symbolism, that at one level, bicycles represent freedom and health and thus wisdom. Certainly Regions Bank down south has launched a major campaign featuring bicycles. But as with most advertising, it's shallow. I know one bicycle advocate who works at their headquarters. They was not invited to be involved. Nor has Regions shown any tendency to even add bike racks at their branches.

Get a big group of riders to crash the ride when it begins. I participated in something similar when Lance Armstrong had his little group ride in Hollywood.

it a car free ride but not a free bike ride.:p
looks like some of the funds go to local bike coalition, which is a good cause. I pay for a couple of organized rides a year that support our local bike programs though one year I did one without paying only because I was really hard up on cash. Though $45 a rider seems a little steep I think ours run $20-25 and that includes the same.
