I've been running 10 miles every other day for a few weeks now and I'm starting to miss cycling so here is my idea:

From Brooklyn, New York I want to cycle the length of long island this coming labor day weekend. I don't want to kill myself so I'm going to want to cycle at an easy pace so as to enjoy the scenery. I'm figuring it will take 2 days with each day having between 6 - 8 hours of riding.
I'm going to initially ride to Bethpage state park, take a break, and from there either take the north fork to Orient Point or the south fork to Montauk.

Each day I should do about 80 miles or so with a goal of one of those days being a 100 mile century. The goals are flexible...I'll see how my body responds.

I need help from you guys to flesh out the details a bit more. Which fork should I take for the most enjoyable ride (scenery)? Or, which fork should I take to take advantage of the best hotels, motels? I don't want to spend a forture and would a chain motel or hotel line. Food? Any good restaurants along the way and/or bicycle shops?
What else?

Cue sheets perhaps? I plan on programming a course in my garmin 705 and adjusting along the way.

Any help from you experts would be appreciated. There are a couple things though that I must insist on though. This is a solitary ride and I don't plan on carrying a cell phone. Just my ipod and my garmin 705. I need desperately to disconnect from it all. At least for a couple days.

You might also cross post in the Touring forum or perhaps better the NORTHEAST sectional
or regional forum as your question asks for geographically specific answers.

Interesting. Ok, I think I will do that just.

Hi,
.
Just a recommendation... Go for Montauk. It's a prettier,
safer ride and there are more small towns, farmers' markets
and reasonably priced accommodations. When you get to
Montauk go through town, on to Star Island. If you're lucky,
the folks at the Deep Sea Club there will let you stay in
the waiters' dorm. It's near the end of the fishing season
in the waters off Montauk now and most of the sport fishing
boats will be following the big fish north. So club activities
should be winding down for the season and the folks who
work there might be accommodating. In any case, it's a
great place to visit, Star Island and the Deep Sea Club.
.
If you sleep out on the ground (I wouldn't recommend it)
on either the north or south fork, use a LOT of insect
repellent. Lyme disease is rampant on both forks and the
mosquitoes in some areas are as big as eagles.
.
Got to go. My Brooklyn daughter is down for the weekend.
.
Good luck with your LI ride. I envy you. I grew up a block
up Circle Drive from the LIRR's Plandome Station, second
to last stop on the Port Washington Line. Never biked out
to Montauk but spent some summers there and in nearby
East Hampton.
.
PS - Almost forgot. There's a tiny, unpretentious motel on
the causeway out to Star Island. Or there was last time I
was there. Don't know prices.
.
PPS - Montauk's commercial fishing fleet dock area is also
interesting. There was a famous shark fisherman there... one
Captain Mundas was, I believe, his name... who was the real
life model for the shark hunter in the late Peter Benchley's
book\movie "Jaws." If you like Peter Benchley's stuff, BTW,
you'll love his father's humorous writings. "My Life in a
Quandary" by Robert Benchley is my favorite.
.
Man, do I digress...
.

Ya kinda late but thanks for the advice. I might do that next time. I just got back from my trip so you can read my other thread I started in the NE regional section.
