it hasn't been hot by normal standards here this year, but i still miss the cold of winter, the grey skies of late fall, the squeaky crunch of new snow below 10 degrees...

not to mention...

1. only sweating when i'm actually working hard, instead of all the damn time
2. bike paths with no rollerbladers, strollers, and dog walkers.
3. a frosty frozen beard
4. launching into snow banks for fun
5. ice riding (with and without studded tires)
6. windburn, but only on what's not covered by beard, glasses, and balaclava.
7. fixed gear on ice and snow.
8. riding to work in the dark, riding home in the dark.
9. my co-workers thinking i'm a warrior (maybe i am, who knows...)
10. my co-workers thinking i'm an idiot (maybe i am, who knows...)
11. wool and that wind-resistant stuff from sporthill

what else?

nice! that's my favorite kind of winter day. it looks clear and calm yet cold enough to allow for snow.

My wife misses my super sexy, slightly stinkey post-ride dance featuring me in nothing but a pair of black leg warmers.

I miss the meditative nature of riding in the cold with a white background.

I miss the adrenaline rush of icey ruts and being "on the edge", riding that fine line between staying vertical and suddenly becoming horizontal. I can come close to that feeling in the summer, riding too fast on the MTB through a rock garden.

Somebody keep track of this thread so we can repost it in Feb. when everyone is complaining. I for one am not ready for winter yet. I't easy to say when you are warm but......

we'll just reverse the answers and put them in a "i miss the heat" thread in about 5-6 months. :p

I love hot weather. The cold just hits me in the bones. Makes my eyes water and my nose run continously. BAH!

SO true!
Ah, the crisp styrofoam crunch of nice cold snow! I haven't lived in a place with a proper winter since I left Minnesota 10 years ago. Someday I'll move back up near Canada where the seasons are as they should be. Vermont, Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, wherever. Real seasons! Hard to imagine, living here. Someday...

I might do just that. Can I post "I miss the cold" during our "winter"? The thing is, it was colder in Tasmania last summer than it is here right now. I've been looking for the coldest temperatures to ride in, and it's barely been below 5 degrees C anywhere! What do I miss? Riding across three mountain passes wearing three layers of clothing and not breaking sweat.

I miss winter too - I love it when it's cold enough that I need 3 or 4 layers to keep hypothermia away. I hate summer when you have to wear pretty much nothing to keep from overheating. Layers are great body armor - I may only wreck in the winter, but I get a lot more paranoid and ride slower in summer, and the only real reason is that I don't have something between the pavement and my skin... Plus in winter the cars move slower...

Give me back 20-40F below!!!!

go ahead.

you won't catch me complaining about the cold in february. it's never been so cold here that i can't ride.

i never look forward to the heat.

This is all I got to say.......

Well, not to break up the (cold) warm fuzzies in here, but the worst part about winter is how low in the sky the sun is. "I'M BLIND!" is pretty much all I say for about four months.

Tis good for us Sun-phobic people. :D

i cant wait for the snow...i spent a year in austin texas, and let me tell you i have had enough sun for the rest of my life. give me a good ohio winter anyday. i think i might go to the dump and try and get some old tires and make my own studs....any sugestions? i was thinking maybe small screws with duct tape or something over the back to keep them from popping the tubes? i am really poor but also very crafty.

Here's a good studding tutorial, along with a lot of general riding technique stuff :

http://edmontonbicyclecommuters.ca/cgi-bin/content/content.cgi?action=winter

Personally, I like skinnier tires in the snow, with just a little bit of knobiness on the outside for cornering. It seems like really knobby tires just fill up with snow for me, and then I'm basically riding around on ice...

narrower tires with some bite. definitely.

basic physics really. smaller contact area for your weight equals more friction and a better chance that you're going to cut through the snow and slush to something that resembles pavement.

of course, if you're not riding on pavement that's covered with snow and ice, it's a different story. if it's all snow and ice, go wide and go studded.

I was thinking the same thing a couple days ago as sweat poured down my face from under my new helmet. The thought of another winter though, well, I shuddered. I don't want to be here for that cold again. I love everything about winter but that deep winter cold, anything under 0F is too cold.

oh, i don't know...

anything below 0F just makes my ordinary 12.5 miles commute into an adventure. sometimes, even something worthy of a fireside, scotch-soaked story.

"...did i tell ya about the time i rode to work when it was 20 below and the steam coming off the lake by the powerplant discharge was so thick that..."

admittedly, it doesn't get sub-zero here nearly as often as it does in MPLS/SP so maybe it would get old after a bit.

or, perhaps it's just because i've got a boring job and therefore rely on my daily commute to provide some interest. it nearly always does...even in the summer.

what else?

In addition to your excellent list:

1. The planning. Finding all the gear you need for the next morning. Washing all of it since it's sweaty from today.
2. The tiny nod of acknowledgement from the two or three other frozen commuters you see.
3. Defrosting your eyes.
4. The stopped traffic on the freeway.

I live in Minnesota, I never miss the cold, our summers are to stinking short.

Too stinking short... The only time I thought they were tooo short was as a kid and being on a canoe trip in the BWCA, I wanted that summer to last forever, we were miles from civilization, family, friends, four canoes 12 travelers, and an area pregnant with history and folk lore, heck we were even in a different coutry (Oh Canada, we stand on guard for thee) we saw historic rock paintings, and wildlife that you don't see in the city.
The one thing I enjoy most about MN is the total change of the seasons, this year they have been a bit off and a bit short, and the trade off month is coming, August, where we get the heat, the humidity, and dead calm, that off set the 20 to 30 below 0F. It is a trade off, one I'm not sure I'm wanting to participate in the coming months.
