I haven't ridden out to Kissena but it would be a good ride, I would go for it. Let me know when you're going and I might join you.

i don't think there is a crossing for peds/bikes through the BX (throgs neck or whitestone bridge) you might need to come across GWB down the henry hudson greenway to midtown and cross over midtown to hit the 59th st (queensboro) bridge. That'll leave you in Queens (long island city) and navigate your way east either along the LIE or take the side streets until you get into the flushing / bayside area. Then you should be able to get to kissena from there.

You can take the Triboro Bridge, its shorter but it has stairs.
I've not done it myself, but here's a route from someone who I know:
Over GW
Take Hudson river greenway to I think 102 street
Go down to 96th street
Go East through park
At 96th street and FDR greenway take greenway north until you see the 109th street bridge to Randalls Island
Go through Randalls Island to Triboro Bridge to Astoria Blvd.
After bridge travel north to Ditmars Blvd. and make a right
Take Ditmars past Astoria Blvd. to Northern Blvd.
Keep going on side road, make left onto Roosevelt Ave.
Take Roosevelt ave to College Point Blvd.
Make right go down about 1.2 miles. You will see the parks on both sides.
Make left onto Booth Memorial
Take that to the Velodrome
Obviously, check the DOT bike map (http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/html/bicyclists/bikemaps.shtml) also for reference on this - have fun!

roosevelt and northern blvd are parallel to each other. College Point BLVD is perpendicular to both northern and roosevelt.
if you're on northern blvd, stay straight going east to Main Street (little chinatown). Make a right on Main Street and continue south until you get to Kissena Blvd (under LIRR tracks that crosses over Main Street). Take Kissena Blvd until you get to Booth Memorial and you should be there.
Careful, Main Street has high car volume and is a busy road. To avoid, continue on northern passed main street to Bowne Street, make a right. Follow Bowne to Kissen Blvd.
roosevelt and northern blvd are parallel to each other. College Point BLVD is perpendicular to both northern and roosevelt.
That confused me too, but I didn't want to mess with the quote since I haven't done it personally - thanks for clarifying for the OP

Ditto on heavy unfriendly car traffic on roads in Queens (i.e. Northern, Roosevelt, Queens Blvd, etc.). I would not recommend riding through Main Street Flushing traffic if you can avoid it. It's like asking for trouble.
.
/\ instead of 21st street once off the QBB, you can also carefully go east against traffic straight off the bridge on Queens plaza three blocks to 29th street, make a left and there's a bike lane heading north. There are not a lot of cars; just watch the buses which pull in fast at the curb (stay to your right until you are at 29th street).
29th north about a mile or so, Right onto 34th ave BL (east), left onto 35th st BL (North) and that should take you right up to Astoria Blvd.
there is a lot of car and ped traffic on Broadway and Steinway; otherwise the route on that section of the Google map is ok

Here's a route I took from the Queensboro Bridge to Kissena as part of a club ride. It stays off the main drags & cuts through Flushing Meadow park, which is cool. It's the first part of the route here:
http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx?course=53970
From Queensboro Bridge
0.0 L 180 degrees onto Queens Plaza North
0.1 L 23rd St, underneath bridge
0.1 L Queens Plaza S
0.3 S Queens Plaza (onto overpass)
0.3 L Skillman (at end of overpass)
0.1 BR 43rd Ave
0.8 L 48th St
0.3 R 39th Ave
0.5 L Woodside Ave
0.0 QR 39th Ave
0.7 L 60th St
0.5 R 34th Ave to end
2.5 R 114th St
0.5 R 43rd Ave
0.2 L 111th St
0.2 L enter Museum parking lot, go around back
of museum, turn left and cross overpass
into Flushing Meadow Pk, find Unisphere
and go East, pass under expressway, bear
right up path to street
1.5 R College Point Blvd
0.1 QL Booth Memorial Ave
/\ that was gonna be my second choice, probably a faster ride with less stopping. The first stretch after 23rd st. along Qns Plz South is nasty (traffic, potholes) but It's only a couple of blocks, and after that, once you're on the Sunnyside yards overpass, it's a nice route.
