Hi

I'm really new to biking; I've been mountain biking a few times and decided to invest in a low end bike - until I've decided to stick with it. It's a second hand custom build;
EXTREME SPORTS MOUNTAIN ATB BIKE.

ALL ALLOY THROUGHOUT BIKE ON ALL PARTS , MAKE UP PF BIKE IS LISTED BELOW.

ALL ALLOY FRAME TIG WELDED AND PREPARED AND SPRAYED , PERFECT CONDITION.

TIOGA GT FORGED ALLOY HANDLEBARS AND STEM.

GILA +PLUS RST T7 ADJUSTABLE FORKS.

BRAND NEW TYRES 26X2.35.

HEAVY DUTY STRONG ALLOY WHEELS HOT METAL EX.5 G103.

FRONT DISK BRAKES.

SHIMANO 21 GEARS HYPERSRIVE GO2.

1LTUS ALLOY CRANK.

STAINLESS STEEL REAR SPROCKET.

WHEELS ARE Q.D DETATCH 26".

Hopefully from this description you can tell me if it's any good? I didn't spend much on it - so I know you get what you pay for. It looks and rides good to me, but what do I know!

So tell me what you think, I'm looking for complete honesty - rip it to bits, or tell me it's great; I'm trying to learn about bikes so would appreciate your feedback.

Thanks in advance :)

Yeah man, judging by the name "EXTREME SPORTS MOUNTAIN" you're off to a rocky start. Names like that are for Wal-Mart bikes to catch the eyes of people who don't know a thing about bikes. On top of that, most of the stuff you listed is worthless information. Front disc brake? Stainless steel cassette? New tires? I've never heard of a lot of the brands you did mention (then again, I'm quite new to the sport as well).

For future reference, use names and models of all your parts. Also, research. Google things, learn as much as you can before posting, so you can help everyone out. It also gives people lesser chances to be dicks ;) (which is an oppurtunity never missed around here). Don't get me wrong, there's a remarkable amount of information from all the members here, and they're more than willing to share, but you will deal with a 'smartass factor'.

Sounds like you have something worthy of riding to class and back and leaving in the rain in between. But hell, beat the daylights out of it until something completely fails and buy a legit bike (it took me exactly one time to massacre my roommates 'Wal-Mart' bike on a real trail). Good luck...

P.S. read the stickies at the top of the forum that say stuff like "READ BEFORE YOU POST HERE" or whatever....

the cranks are worth alot, but the main point of interest on the bike are the HEAVY DUTY STRONG ALLOY WHEELS HOT METAL EX.5 G103.

they are just about the toughest, most advanced wheelset available.

The 1LTUS ALLOY CRANK alone is what makes it a sweet ride. Where do you come across these deals? Are those "disk brakes" compatible with a PC or Mac?

Aw come on guys. Be nice.

Wired are you able to post a picture of it here?

Your description is vague and that is what is leading people to think that this bike is something that was bought at a big box store like WalMart or maybe Kmart or Target. Those bikes usually will fall into the toy category because there were not meant for real mountain bike riding. Sometimes on the frame there will even be a sticker saying not to use it for such. Using it in that way could be dangerous.

When you say custom build, do you mean that the previous owner changed the parts around? That is why I am asking for a picture. Hopefully of the components - gears, brakes, drivetrain and such.

He asked for complete honesty, so I'll be up front.

For now if you are just starting out and trying to figure if you are going to be able to get into the sport, it will get the job done for now. But once you do really get into it, dump that piece of junk and get a better bike. Simply because as you get better the only thing that bike is going to do is hold you back and likely will not stand up to the beat down it would get.

Well thanks for your honesty... :)
Bikernator (http://www.bikeforums.net/member.php?u=151962) - thanks for the constructive feedback
I really did pay pennies for it - so I'm not expecting great things. I've posted a few pics - the frame looks abit more like a dirt bike - I guess. I don't want to spend big bucks on a bike untill I'm sure I'll get good use out of it.

Thanks for posting pics!

Looks like the bike had a paint-over, right? If you really didn't pay a whole lot for it then I would just go ahead and use it around town or to go back and forth to school and for errands. I wouldn't use it for anything rough on a trail. As you get to liking cycling more than you will by then know what type of riding you will be into and from here will eventually learn about different components. It will be much easier by then to figure out a good bike to be used on the dirt. :)

Wired,
I for one, think you're doing it right.
Too many folks spend big bucks at the beginning, then don't ride.
For pennies, you've bought a ticket into a world of fun.
Frame looks strong enough. Fork steerer is probably steel. Brand name handlebar. No worries.
Hit the trails.
Fix the minor things when they break/go out of adjustment.
But don't drop any real money into upgrades. Save it for the next bike.

Ride the bike and if you really like the sport you will form your own opinion on the bike. My opinion matters little as I dont have to ride it. Welcome to mountain biking and to the MB forum.

Thanks guys!

Yeah Siu, it came like that, will be changing the colour soon as.

Done a little bit of research and most of the componants seam to come from a Muddy Fox. Someone has said that the frame could be a Saracen. So can't be all bad.

Sorry I called you a Troll...I removed it when I saw you posted pic's of a bike you actually had.

Save up for a Specialized Hardrock...you'll ride it for years.

I like the geometry and also has horizontal dropouts so it can convert over to single speed nicely for a bang around bike if you ever get another bike. Good score.

If it has two wheels and puts a smile on your face then the rest doesn't really matter! At least it will get you out and about, and like you said if you enjoy it then invest some more money down the line. One thing is for sure though, MTB gets more and more expensive the more you do it!
