Just placed an order at REI for a Novara Transfer commuter bike. It appear to be a great bike from reviews. Anyone out there been on this particular bike or own one? This will be my main commuter bike around town. Are the compenents decent? I'm currently riding a Trek 7.3FX(hybrid) and wanted to know if it will ride like a hybrid or more like a mountain bike.

I currently ride an older Transfer, and have enjoyed it as a commuter bike for quite a while. This term, I'm riding 6 days per week, 10 miles one way, with 25-32 lbs of school books and supplies along with the usual repair items and tools in the paniers and rack trunk.

I've had to replace the chain once so far over three years (Yes, I let it go far too long! :p ), and am getting ready to rotate the tires over the coming weekend (the rear wears a good bit faster carrying all the books and such). Because I'm on a studetn budget, I do my own maintenance rather than spending extra money for shop services. I've been able to maintain the bike, and learned a lot about how to tune it and keep it running well enough.

Good bike for a city commuter riding mostly on roads and well-paved paths, imo.

Be careful putting a worn rear tire on the front. The squared off tread is not good for cornering traction. Many people just buy one tire at a time, put the new one on the front, and move the front one to the rear. That way, you get full use out of each tire, and you always have a good one up front.
