My x5 just wont work the way it did. I have a new cable so is it time to up grade It came on the bike and has a ton of miles on it. Also it seems to have a little play at the hanger mount

Rear derailleurs last forever if not wrecked . . . Try tightening the hanger.

My Ultegra RD had to be replaced after about 10 years and a lot of use. It was never in a wreck. I was having trouble shifting and the LBS said it was the RD. So I bought a new one and everything worked fine. Never was in a wreck.

We can't be sure ... from what you wrote above ... that your RD really did have any problems.

Rare.

Almost always a hanger alignment issue, limit screw issue, and/or cable adjustment issue.

RDs are pretty durable gizmos, generally.

Derailleurs can last a long long long long time. That being said, less expensive moving parts (like X3-X7, Altus, Alivio, Deore) will generally wear out faser than higher-end stuff... I believe this is what makes more expensive parts worth more money in general. When they are new, an Ultegra Derailleur and a Tiagra derailleur function almost identically. When they are three years old, it will be much harder to keep the Tiagra in adjustment.

I remember years ago, a lot of Shimano derailleurs would develop a lot of slop in the pivot around the main monuting bolt... this was, as I recall, not repairable and necessetated the derailleur be replaced.
