Yesterday was the only day I could get in a long ride prior to the Auburn century. I had it in my head that I was going to ride to Alta and back. (Roughly 135+- miles). Left my house about 7:20 and headed up the bike trail, and continued on to Auburn. Felt good, and there was plenty of shade on Auburn-Folsom. Auburn was a little warm, but nothing I couldn't deal with. However, there was no shade on the frontage roads. Started to get a little toasty. Continued up Placer Hills, which was still in shade. Got to old town Colfax and stopped for a quick snack and iced coffee in old town. The temperature gauge was 91º. I continued on down to Rollins Lake and climbed the Norton Grade, but by the time I reached the top, I was starting to feel the heat. I realized that another 12-13 uphill miles would be really stupid and headed for home. Passed a bunch of riders at Rollins Lake that had just finished a ride to Baxter. They told me it was really hot in the exposed areas. As I passed back through Colfax, the temp was 94º. It was 12:30. Even though it was downhill from Colfax to Fair Oaks, I was done. The Wells Fargo temp sign in Applegate said 102º. It was just ugly riding down Auburn-Folsom. I made it home ok, but I hope it isn't as hot on 9/12 for the Auburn Century. I still got in 100+ miles and a lot of climbing, but I am paying for it today
