What I would buy, if I were a city person is an IF-Reach-DC-Folding bike described on the page below.

http://ridethisbike.com/2009/07/if-r...irst-ride.html

It IS a real electrically assisted bicycle, 250 Watt motor with torsion sensing, Lithium Ion battery, has 20 inch wheels, uses its 8 speed deraillieur system to transmit motor and leg power, weighs 42 #, but folds to 36 * 16 * 26 inches and is wheelable folded. It is fully suspended. Its listed price is $2,500.

In a further review the 30 mile range is sited.

ridethisbike.com is presently a dealer for the IF-REACH Folding bicycle. The electric version arrived in US in July 09. I expect they will become a dealer for it as well. I have no connection with them. I just think the bike is neat, especially the BB-Motor. The IF-REACH (no motor) comes in an 18 speed 'Sports' version for $1824.

I know some fans of folders would say it's an oxymoron to have electric folding bikes since the addition of electric power components make the bikes heavier and sometimes less easy to handle when folded. That said, there are some nice, affordable folding bikes that could be outfitted with conversion kits and make very nice rides, especially if you need to take the bike into your place of employment or an apartment. Here's an example of a Schwinn Loop that has been electrified.

While lightness is a plus for any foldewr since they get carried sometimes, the purpose of folding is not having a light bike but one that can shrink in volume through folding so that it can be accomodated in busses, trains, buildings, trunks and racks and allowed in markets, cafes, under the desk etc.

Also there are bikes weighting less than 15 kgs.

it looks like they might be using a crystalyte 209 motor on there. My store is in the process of converting a Bike Friday Hyperfold with one of those. it is going well thus far

The bike in the video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4QPwA0FeHM) is a folding "Schwinn" Loop. The Loop is a tough little test mule we got for around $200. The motor is the inexpensive Nine-Continent 2806 on a just a basic 20A controller and CA. Top level speed is 27mph (43kph) with incredible range -we honestly get tired from riding before the pack gives up.

The heart of the system is the LiFePO4 48V 15Ah pack which we had engineered to fit perfectly in the space used by 36 and 48v SLAs. The BMS is on-board and no messy wires. This pack is not a joke.

We just got the production LiFePO4 48V/15Ah packs in stock and ready to ship.

More bikes and parts are in the works to be added later this summer and into the winter.
