I'll be frank. I ride a hardtail mountain bike and not a racing bike but I used to cycle qiute hard (30miles in 2hrs) quite a lot and now the veins in my legs stick out when I stand up. Anyone else had a similar problem? and what is your solution, apart from surgery?

best option for getting rid of varicose veins is the relatively new procedure that uses a laser or RF probe to scar the walls of the main vein together, followed by in-office removal or sclerosis of branch veins. may or may not be covered by your insurance plan.
otherwise (besides traditional surgical stripping), no way to eliminate them. you can wear support socks to decrease symptoms.

Are you sure that it is Varicose Veins? You probably are. However, I thought I would mention that I have several areas on my left leg that have become slightly varicose. But, I just started riding this year, back in January, and have put nearly 2,100 miles on my bike. With all that riding, my calves have become very vascular, a desirable trait I understand. So, I have both and I agree they are unsightly. For now, I'll live with it, but in the future laser surgery sounds like the ticket.

dude, those veins in your legs mean you are a CYCLING BEAST! be proud!
I saw something where they used saline to collapse the veins- it's instant, no apparent side effects, and it's permenant.

Koffee stuff like that only works with the little superficial "spider" veins, and only temporarily. true varicosities have saphenous vein incompentence as the root cause, and the saphenous can't be taken out with an injection.
there are a number of "vein clinics" that have popped up offering injections as a cure. at a price. caveat emptor.

Are overweight? Is there anybody else in your family with
leg vein problems?
Excess weight combined with prolonged standing on hard man
made surfaces (concrete) is tough on legs and feet. Blood has
a tendancey to pool in the lower extremities which will put
a strain on the leg vein valves. If there is any genetic
predispostion to vein problems then you'll have veins that
will swell and not pump blood properly.
That said this type of problem should NOT be ignored as in
time the pooling of blood will become painful or at least
lead to legs that feel like lead. My strong suggestion is
that you see a doctor ASAP to get some managment going for
you. It may be a simple as comression hose ( I wear these
every day and they are great) rather than radical surgury.
DO NOT put off a visit to a doctor because if this condtion
if ignored to long leg ulcers or worse can devlope. (I'm not
kidding with you, mate. )

Do they hurt? Varicose veins hurt.
You might just be loosing excess fat.
I have noticed Veins in my arms and more recently, my legs are becoming more visible. I'm working under the assumption that it is due to the loss of subcutaneous fat.
