Northeast - Ever Volunteer At The Transalt NYC Century?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I just submitted an application to volunteer at the Astoria Park rest stop on September 13. Unfortunately, another commitment I have that same day may force me to abort. (I noted this in my application, so please don't think I'm one of those undependable volunteers!)

I've marshaled rides before, but I've never worked a rest stop. Can anybody fill me in on what goes on at these things? Also, if you've ever done THIS ride at THIS park, do you have any tips on what time to arrive (I'm volunteering 8am to 1pm), where to park, etc? I'll be coming in from Nassau County, LI.

Tom, the wife and I have volunteered at Astoria before; it's a good time. Not sure if Ken is still running it but if so, you'll be in good hands.

You basically get put in charge of one station or another (one year we made a bazillion PBJs; the year before that I manned the energy drinks). You could probably just come super early and leave whenever you need to (or come and stay later) in order to make your other commitment; I am sure they'll appreciate any help you can give.

re: parking, not sure where is best but there are a lot of side streets around the park. If it's a nice day, would taking your bike onto the LIRR and subway be an option? you could go to Woodside and take the 7 to Queensborough and then either ride to the park on Vernon Blvd. (bike Lane) or take the N/W up to the end of the line, which puts you out only a short ride away.
